Koralia failure rate?

I have had one Koralia 4 quit working after a year. I am pretty sure the motor burned out because the propeller got stuck. I now clean the powerheads every month or two by placeing them in vinagar/water bath for several hours.

I have 2x #4's, 2x #3's in my 75 gallon tank right now that have been working for over a year and a half. One of the #4's is about 6 months and is working great. I have never experienced any shocking from any of the powerheads.

my number one that i have had for a year and a half now still runs great and for the first 6 months i had it on a wave timmer. thats now in my 46. my new toy from hydor is the magnum 6 (in the 125) i have it on a regular timer so it goes on and off every 15 min during the day and on once an hour during the night for 15min. sofar no problems with it. for a $100+ each they better work right with no problems!

2/3 are still working after about 6 months. Dont thing the other 2 are leaking because i always have cuts on my hand when playing around in the tank.

hmm this should be a good "test" lol

Please post in a year how many are a) still working b) are leaking

should be interesting.

sure will if i remember.
these are going into a frag tank
and voltage leak im just not gonna care much about.

the induction from my lighting already does that

Do you seriously not care about voltage in your tanks? Sorry but regardless of the amount that just seems careless. Just my opinion though...

id think you're going to a) want snails in your frag system b) eventually stick your hands in the tank. Just 2 K4s hurt like hell for me.

Thats kind of what I was thinking but also just that something is not right if you have voltage in saltwater. The two do not mix. I understand it may not be enough to hurt you but one you don't know what exactly its doing to livestock and two its so uncomfortable when you put your hands in the tank!

What do you think is causing the failure? Are you doing any maintenance / cleaning?

I have not seen any issues with them. I put one in my tank about a year ago and have added a few since then.

I think they are just hit or miss. The ones I have had going for a year plus now are fine. The problem for me is that Im just over 50% failure rate. So they have been more expensive for me than they should be.

Its really too bad because they are a nice powerhead for the price...when they work!

I do clean them once a month in vinegar along with all my pumps.

voltage really dosnt hurt livestock unless it is to an extream

salt water is conductive
and looking at it from the point of a simple voltage divider. almost no voltage will pass throu an object that is immersed in water without a direct ground.

also the system is grounded so any stray current will go away.
now if a bare wire gets exposed thats definitly an issue.

but really.. almost every store and wholesaler has stray voltage and it is a pita...but if its just to the point where it tingles on a cut it isnt going to cause an issue

oh also all tanks are on GFCI and grounded.. so.. not an issue if the CURRENT is bad

this simply isn't true.

My snails did not move for more then a month. Completely idle. Nassarious still moved but astera and turbos idled and starved to death. Right after unplugging the pumps the few survivors started moving. Now a few days later they've been pigging out.

Also since I had no water quality issues other then this I am completely convinced that this was the cause of my corals dying. Fish were the only that were not effected but I've heard of them acting different with stray voltage as well.

btw my tank did have a grounding probe as well.

I have had NO problems ever with them. Only one time when my pacu was dumb and tried to eat the 110AC power cable... sealed er up and now it works perfect.

I think this is an excellent thread in that I have not seen too many people having problems with Koralias. Since they are a relatively new pump on the market its good to start to get some feed back on them
Especially when the k5-8 magnums are out now with increased flow but a much more hefy price tag to them.

I hope more people report their findings here.

I have been running 5 of them for the last 2 years---three of them on an interval timer with no problems but it is still good to start to see where possible problems can occur

Here is another thread on the new magnums just to cross link them

and here is a blog from the log book on Koralias in general

Have you by any chance given the magnums a shot? I am very curious about them.

To be honest, if I hadn't had so many problems with my original Koralias, I would give one a try. But I think I've just had too many bad experiences with them to spend that much. Probably going to go vortech but Im curious about the magnums.

I am in the process of upgrading to a 220 gal so I am giving serious thoughts to two K8's rather then a closed loop system.
If you check with the other thread I linked to above --it is starting to get into a good evaluation of them.
