l/f CBB

gary i may be way off base here.the company i work for has bags of pedalow.is that what your looking for??im gonna search it now

Gary.......You might want to ask KentE. He might have what your looking for....just a suggestion.

Gary - CBB as in Copperband Butterflyfish? That's what I would have originally thought, but the conversation then turned to Magflake and Peladow, so now I'm thinking I might not know what you're talking about.

Anyway, if you DO mean a Copperband Butterflyfish, I haven't seen one locally, but LiveAquaria has them in stock with their 14-day guarantee, and the Diver's Den (WYSIWYG) had one yesterday (it's gone now though as I just checked). Usually, Diver's Den has multiples of each fish they offer, so I would not be surprised at all if they had another today (personally, if I were going to buy a CBB, I think I would need to see it first to make certain it's mouth wasn't damaged). Just got my DD Sneak Peek e-mail, and no CBB today.

If you did want to order from LiveAquaria or Diver's Den, let me know as I could easily be convinced to order as well and split the shipping costs with you.

One more comment about the CBB...I don't know if you've considered it or not, and I have NO idea how much they are, but I've read a few threads on RC discussing the benefits of the Mueller's Butterflyfish (Chelmon muelleri) over the standard CBB. They're very similar in appearance, still eat Aiptasia, and supposedly more hardy than your standard CBB. The downside is that they are more rare, which I am assuming means more $$$.

Reefkeeping Magazin recently had an article on one. I don't know if I can link to it here, but a simply Google search should turn up the article.

thanks, Jason. Yes- CBB here means the fish. I would only purchase one locally after inspecting the fish.

As for Magflake- you'd think that someone around Rochester would carry the stuff!

Tagging along. Thanks Jason. Linked to the article about Mueller's butterfly. Gary, which fish do you think would be most likey to eat Majanjoes? I'm thinking of using my 180, attatched to the sump and putting rockes in there to get "cleaned" by a butterfly.

IME CBB's don't eat Majano.

If Majano are on rocks kept seperate from corals the number of Butterflyfish species you might try really opens up because a lot of Chaetodonts eat them.

Gary,
A local place down here that sells stone & blocks carries it.
Try a masonary supplier in the yellow pages.

Gary,

I was at CF today, and they have 2 CBBs there that came in earlier this week (Tuesday). I saw both of them eat, though Millie thought the one might have had some ich spots on it (I did not see this). The other was a little more reclusive. My untrained eye thought the mouths of both looked to be in decent shape, but I wouldn't doubt that somebody with a little more experience wouldn't find issues with one or both of them.

I'd love one, but EllieSuz tried one, did all the right things, and it still didn't make it. That experience made me even more scared to get one. They also have a Leopard Wrasse there too (I think it was a female meleagris, but it may have been a female Blue Star), but I couldn't pull the trigger. Again, too scared. They said they had 2 of them, but I never saw the 2nd, and I watched the tank it was supposedly in for a good 10 - 15 minutes.

Anyway, good luck with the CBB, and let me know how you make out...

I've always wanted a CBB and tried to keep several of them by feeding Fanworms, Black Worms, and even live shrimp; they still perished after a short period of time. I ended up giving up and came to the conlusion that maybe it's just a fish not meant for captivity. My gut instinct is that if it's not eating frozen food at the LFS, your chances are slim (to none) of keeping it alive. Gary... did you have one in the past? I remember seeing one in a FTS and being envious. Good luck on your hunt.

sorry to hear that, Joe.

excellent suggestion. Thanks!

Thanks for the tip, Jason. As some already are aware, I've had 3 or 4 CBB's over the past 17 years. I'm about 50/50 with them. One was doomed from the start since the tip of it's "snout" was bent during shipment and that's why J mentioned something about the mouths. The last one I had for a couple of years and it ate no prepared foods- only what pods it could find in my aquarium. When I transferred aquariums earlier in 2010 it interrupted it's food supply by causing my pod poulation to take a dip.

Congratulations Gary. Which one did you get, the outgoing one in the top tank, or the shy one in the bottom tank? Maybe I'm not as bad at judging the quality of CBBs as I thought...:lol2:

Congrats again...can't wait to see it in your tank...

And Happy New Year to you too!

Congratulations, knowing your track record with these fish, I'm sure it will do fine for you. The CBB I got ate mysis six times a day in quarantine. He'd wag his tail when I got near the tank and follow the feeding tube around scarfing down as much mysis as I would feed him. I thought I really had a keeper. Once in the display tank, he quit eating frozen, even though he would still follow the feeder tube, he just wouldn't eat it. He cleaned up the feather dusters and then starved to death. I felt awful and guilty for buying him when I was well aware of the difficulty involved, but he was eating so well at the LFS. Their beauty is their downfall.

I got really lucky with my first CBB.
Back when Tom worked at CF I watched him feed it. That fish lasted 2+ years in my reef aquarium before some electrical current killed it.
This new fish has some issues but I think they can be overcome with some TLC. It certainly looks very promising this morning.
I'll give it some time before I get in it's face with a camera :)
