Landlords Log - Breeding Tomato Clowns

Can you build a basic wood stand and trim it with Oak and buy pre made doors? I would love to see a nice oak breeding setup.
You should see the nice custom cabinetry in Kurt's house. I don't think he'll have a problem with the woodworking part of the setup! I think it's the display that he's worried about. (fearful that a line of tanks would look like a pet store)

I don't know if a custom acrylic display would be better, or if you go with multiple glass tanks and have a nice trim divider frame that separates them visually up front. (think of a six panel glass door except the glass panes are the sides of the tanks in a row)

I am thinking that the ability to remove the tanks for cleaning should be a high priority, which lends itself to multiple smaller tanks. On the other hand I if I could access the tanks with ease, for cleaning purposes, then a segmented acrylic could be in order. Too many decisions. I do like the "Six panel door" laying on its side idea....

Quick One

Between the four batches that I am raising I currently have

batch II - Qty 36 at 5/8 to 3/4 of an inch eating Oto B2/C1
batch II and IV (Combined them) - Qty 30 at 1/2 eating Oto A still...
batch V - Qty 100+ eating Oto A all through meta.

Yeah!!! no more rotifers for the time being!

Now what to do with 166 Tomato Clowns.

Congrats Landlord...are those your baby Tomato Clowns at a LFS in Kenton County?

I currently have no clowns at any LFS but I hope to someday! They have about another month or so to go before the LFS (In Florence) will take 'em, hopefully they do not change their mind.

Thanks for the kind words.

Ed - Just got back last weekend. Getting back into the swing of things. Had a small electrical fire on the number 2 port of my reefkeeper2 so that is keeping me busy. Too many plugs not enough juice.

sheesh.

anyways I got a breeders rack with 8 tanks all set up and running (4 weeks now) I'll get some pics up. Set up another display tank for anemones and clowns (3 weeks back), finishing up a cycle as we speak.

Awesome news about your fish!

Anyways I gotta get caught up on a few thousand threads here but I'll be back.

Take Care

Wow, I can't wait to see the pictures. Did you set it up in the corner where your old setup was?

BTW: I got a lesson from Melev on the camera so I'm ready to take some more photos of your stuff when you're ready.

I'm on my way back from vacation as I type. (love the Verizon broadband card) We're just north of Columbus & my wife took over the driving. I kept up on most of the threads so I don't have that to worry about - just the work I need to complete on my own setup.

Catch you later!

8 tanks. Man you are going to have enough tomatoes for the entire world :)

For sure!

On another note, this Friday I am finally moving 4 fish from my first batch to 2 new homes. I got them wiened onto nls pellets and they are fat as hogs.

:)

BTW - 8 tank is a PITA. Gotta get another skimmer and some carbon running for sure. Water is the color of hay.

Negative!

Wife put the hammer down and made me move the whole kit and kaboodle to the basement. It works out much better. Since with the new found real estate upstairs I just finished cycling a brand spankin new 38 gallon dedicated anemone / clown tank.

I am sure your father-in-law was excited to help with the new display tank. Did you move the anemone over or purchase new livestock?

F-I-L has been in Florida for a month so I let him know that I need something to replace the ugly HomeDepot shelf I put it on

He wasn't amused, but he understands my addiction, and needed a new project anyways.

My big GBTA split and I put one of the clones in along with 4 RBTAs I scored off of an RC user out of Lexington.

Very pleased with how it turned out.

Wow a great read!

I'm looking to start a breeding system shortly and am doing my research. How much Otohime A would you guess that you've used to date with the the five batches? Just trying to get a guestimate for start up costs.

Thanks.

How about some new pics Kurt?

Kenzy: You don't use much Oto A at all even the small bag that comes in the startup kit from Reeds (I think) lasts quite a long time. You need other sizes after the first month approx as well. I'm in Belleville and I buy Otohime regularly. Actually I'm going to be getting some A soon. I also have Rotifers if you need some to get started. Shoot me a pm.

Thanks, I think that's what I am trying to decide, if the starter pack is enough or if I need to buy the individual bulk packs just to get the ball rolling.
I'm still a ways off from needing supplies yet, first thing I need to do is get my large female Maroon an acceptable mate.
Thanks.

Ok some long overdue pictures, pretty crummy ones at that. I really need to get the algae under control in the rack but the cycle created by adding all the fish was a bit overwhelming. Multiple turbos are trying to knock out some of it but I believe more drastic actions will be needed. In any case

These are the fellas from my first batch at day 105. I will begin offloading them on Monday to various people/places :)

..and some very poor shots of my combined batches 2,3,4 and 5. The guys are at day 84, 73, 62 and 51 but they all appear to be the same size. Go figure.

Lastly, here are a couple shots of the rack system I built for them. It is lacking a skimmer for now and could definitely use a massive carbon filter. I have removed my ozone reactor from my SPS tank which I will be installing onto this system in the next couple of weeks or so. It is lit with low wattage HomeDepot T5's with a central drainage system and individually controllable returns. 8 drilled 10 gallon tanks total with a 30 gallon sump (rubbermaid tub). No real hard plumbing on the tank, just soft tubing which can be pulled out of the drain assembly T's for ease of removal and cleaning (which I need to do :) )

A closer view of one level.

I really need to put some work into this system but have since been spending money on more domestic things lately. Must not forget that without a happy wife and children, everyone is miserable.

Take Care

More to come later on down the road

Looks great Kurt! Nice clean design... Where did you get the lids for the tanks made? Are they glass or acrylic?

Get a closeup of your "overflows" when you get a chance. I am curious how you plumbed them...

--Ed

Ed,

The tops are made from a thin sheet of acrylic I got at HomeDepot for like 40 bucks. I was able to cut out 8 lids as well as baffles for a sump I created for the new clownfish tank I set up upstairs.

I will get some closeups of the overflows for you too. Pretty easy, I just need to swap out the drain line connectors for larger diameter drain hoses. These 1/2 inch flexible tubes do not drain quick enough and I have been forced to dial back the returns.
