Large angels and Tangs

Out of curiousty does anybody have any really large angels or tangs? You see in Liveaquaria they get 1-2 ft long, do they actually get that big, if so can you post a pic?

French Angel. 15" mouth to tail. Also note the hifin snapper. This tank used to have a black tang the size of dinner plate as well. Died after 15 years in captivity.

Yes, many fish really get that big (the French angel above is a great example). Some don't. What fish in particular are you looking at?

I have a 265 gal 7ft I will be setting up soon and like the tangs and angels, but I don't want to get crazy and over stock, so I was seeing what kind of actual sizes these fish get. I see lots of threads of 6-12inch fish, nothing really over that much, maybe they are just rare when they get full grown, not sure.

This is how big French Angels can get. These two were eating pieces of sponge the fairly good sized turtle was eating.

Beautiful fish Funk!

Correction, those may be Gray Angels.

What kind of tangs and angels were you wanting to get is the better question. LA max size listed I would assume would come from max size listed they have seen from all their whole sale sources. Wild caught fish purchased as juvs rarely reach max listed size in most home aquariums

I tend to take max sizes pretty seriously, fish grow quickly ime when properly housed and fed. Granted, certain large angels will take longer growing while tangs could be there in as little as 2-3 years. I'm not saying that the fish will always reach the 18" maximum length, but don't expect it to stop at 12" if that makes sense.

I had a 13 inch hippo tang in my 240, as well as a 14 inch vlamingi tang that was still basically a juvenile

Those are gray angels Hogfan, but the are very similar in size to French angels. I have a French that I got as a 3 or 4 inch juvenile, and he is easily the biggest pig and fastest growing fish in my tank. He is about 5 or 6" long now and just as tall, after roughly 8 months. Meanwhile, my yellow and naso tangs really haven't grown much at all in that time (both are about 3-4"), and my 2.5" red coris wrasse hasn't grown at all, even though they eat plenty

Alternatively, I have a yellow tang that I got as a freebie on a blue zoo order, so it was tiny, just barely quarter sized. A year and a half later, he's a solid 5" and still growing.

I haven't really decided on my total stocking list, but do like tangs, so would like to get several types. I like the naso, so would probably get one of those. Just was wondering how often they get max size. Not fair to the fish to be 1.5ft and stuck in a 7ft tank! Thanks for the input guys!!!

naso tangs certainly will get between 12-16 inchs in a 7 foot tank. had to rehome mine after 3 yrs in my 7 foot 210g.

I think that most people don't keep angels for 12+ years so it's hard to get an idea on growth rates in captivity

I'm going to make a stocking list here that you could try.

2 ocellaris clownfish (mated pair)
1 regal blue/hippo tang
1 yellow tang
1 naso tang
1 scopas tang
1 emperor angel
1 flame angel or 1 coral beauty angel
1 multibar angel
1 royal gramma basslet
1 chocolate chip sea star

This might be too many fish but I'm not sure. The flame, coral beauty, and multibar angels are dwarf angels so only grow to about 4 inches long, not very large compared to large angels. The flame and coral beauty angels shouldn't be kept together.

Lol. Funkateer. Nice AW pic.
I tried to buy that black tang from Pat right after he got it in about 6yrs ago
