Last nights storm - Lightning Photos

Hey everyone,

As most of you know we had a WHOPPER of a storm move thru last night and I, of course was out all night shooting Lightning photos. Heres a few of what I captured from the Farm&Fleet parking lot on Riverside looking towards I-90 and the gas stations. I had one bolt hit in front of me about 50 yrds as I was driving and turning into the parking lot.

I had one photo that was solid white, which was a bolt that hit so close it blinded me and the camera. If you want to see more of my lightning photos you can check them out here.

Great pictures!!! I talked to my mom this afternoon about all the flooding... I was up there visiting last labor day when you got all the rain.

Very cool pic's I was driving into work during the storm, I just made it before they started closing the roads. I had one driver that took an extra hour to get into work.

ahuxman58, If you ever want to shoot lightning let me know... I have the spots to shoot from along with lighting triggers to help reduce taking 1000 images of nothing (if your shooting with a Canon). If theres a storm with lighting coming around northern IL, Im out shooting it. I must warn you though... Once you get some lightning shots you get adicted to shooting them.
The ones I posted are just recent ones and not really all that good of shots compared to want I usually capture during a good storm.

This is what gets your heart beating......... A Tornado Formation over your house as you shoot from a half mile a way taken from behind farm&fleet on Riverside ( the water tower is 2 blocks from my house off Mulford).

Here's my first effort at lightning shots thanks to Paul. LOL what a blast that was. Not anything special but not bad for a newbie .

(if you look at the roof of the house you can see the reflection of the bolt, meaning it started over my house and hit behind my neighbor in the backyard)

WOW, those last photo's from this AM's storm are awesome. Too close for my comfort level for photographing!

You need to catch and store some of that energy, you could sell electricity for a while from a single strike. :)

those are amazing pictures. i love the one with the tornado cloud--though it's probably kind of freaky to be there picturing it as it forms. do you have something that lets the lighting trigger the camera or do you have lightning fast reflexes?

PS. if you ever want a closer shot, launching a model rocket into the storm cloud will cause the lightning to ride down the smoke trail. but i wouldn't suggest standing very close.
