latz clowns coming from aus..

i don't know if this was covered already or not but just fyi, these are cb latz. They came in on the exact same date as another lfs owner in a different state. Some of them have under-developed upper jaws/noses. So, if you're buying be careful about which ones you select. For the fella wondering about how they're coming in this time of year, that's your explanation.

+1

There are some on ebay, same pictures from the same store.

Search "Latz Clowns" - I think.

The ebay info states they are 'wild caught' from Australia...

Yes that is what I was told. Does anyone know if there is a breeder of these clowns in Australia? They also have some other "wild caught" fish from Australia. So, I dont doubt but would like more info.

Mr. Blue raises them in AU if I'm not mistaken. As far as pricing one vendor is going with $300/ea or $500/pr. The one in TX is like $400/ea $700pr.

These would be great for breeding stock because they're CB, but they just have a defect common to CB fish. There is nothing wrong with them genetically. Some say it's from poor water quality some suggest it's from bumping into the walls of the holding tank when they're developing. Your guess is as good as mine.

On the West Coast they go for $80-$100 each.

And as people have pointed out, they are currently becoming available because it is early summer in Australia and the weather is allowing collection. They are broadly available and are not considered an uncommon or limited species. Most collectors do not bother with them because they do not sell for enough money (versus angels and other higher-priced fish). Understand that there are a limited number of licensed collectors for ANY fish off Australia coasts, and because of the short season they have to make as much money in a short period of time as they can - and clowns are typically not on the top of the list (at least according to the collector I spoke with).

lol, try again... i got the store to mail me some pics.. i couldnt make it down due to a work meeting :(

These look rather unhealthy. Perhaps it is just the lighting? Very washed out and stressed looking. They also seem to have large and bulging eyes - never a good sign with this species. Fish #2 has all the signs (to me) of a bad CB (bad jaw, humped back, etc).

They look VERY young.

I agree. What concerns me is the difference in appearance between the two. Wild caught clowns of a similar age from the same source are usually very close in appearance. Notice the difference in body shape and eye size? Perhaps it is just camera angle and distortion through the glass...

In season or not in season discounted; based on physical appearance alone you would be hard pressed to convince me that these fish were WC.
I said they are CB because the source that I use who also got them in Monday said they are CB. I have dealt with my source regularly for rare clowns and he has brought in and sold me WC latz before. Given the appearance and time line of arrival of the fish from this TX source, I'd say they are from the same batch as my source's.
In fact, I would venture to say that they were from a basement breeder and not a commercial hatchery, because they'd have been culled if they were from a commercial hatchery.

As for the stressed appearance I'd say give them a break they just came from overseas and may even have been trans-shipped in the process. The pics were taken not long after being delivered after what was likely a 72 hour transit period. I'm sure the ones that get over the shipping stress will do well in the long run.

If someone wants them as pets and is willing to pay these prices I support them. I would not pay for them unless it was for breeding stock and I would ask for a discount based on their defects. I mean no insult to the retailers in saying that they are charging a premium price for a sub standard product. Actually I feel like the retailers got shafted. Anyone willing to buy latz at those prices will probably recognize the defect and pass on them. I think the breeder is doing a great service by producing these clowns but I would ask that they improve the product a bit before releasing them to the open market.

BTW, I only know about this defect because I bought some CB leucs with the same defect a couple years ago and couldn't figure out why nobody wanted them.... That prompted me to do a little research.

All good points

As far as price I am confused. DD sold a piar, no doubt they were wild caught and male&female for over a grand. Yes they offer a guarantee which may be the reason for the premium but at 700 a pair that seems to be fair. $500 I would say is a steal.

As far as $80-$100 each please let us know here in middle America who we can get this from. Yall in Cali get the first pick of all the good stuff. I need to take a trip out there and do some shopping. Do airlines still make you put everything in 3 ounce containers? :hmm5:

In the last few years I have paid $225-$300 per fish for latz. Only one was $300. The other six were $250 or less. They were purchased in CA, FL, IL, and PA. The one from CA was $300.
I could see a proven pair (photos included) going for $1000 or more but that would be the exception.

Well the LFS is contacting the supplier. Thew were told they are all wild caught and paid appropriately for such. They pulled them from the website until they can get confirmation. Also, said the price will be reduced or money will be refunded. Thanks for the help everyone.

FYI, I am still going to get them
