Learning/rebuilding from my epic fail

Tank looks great, Matt. Love your aquascape. It looks like the tank will turn out to be like your old tank in no time.

Nick, thanks for dropping in! I'm hoping it will eventually be like my old tank!! I don't know about anytime soon but I can wait..

Your corals look healthy, that supersedes everything else. Interesting that your cyano is worse after taking pellets offline. Like you, I would have thought the opposite.

Yes.. That's why I'm not going to go crazy about the nuisance algeas.. I'm just going to try to tweak things slowly..

I tried ZEOzym with with both KZ cyanoclean and ZEObak on separate occasions in the past. In my case, it aggravated cyanobacteria every time I used it. Prominent zeoheads told me that this was not their observation, but they advised me not to continue with ZEOzym treatment. Moreover, some users reported increase increase in PO4 readings shortly after ZEOzym dosing. I did not quite understand how and why enzymes in ZEOzym impacted on phosphates.

Every reef tank is based on different checks and balances. Cyanobacteria are very opportunistic to exploit any changes/shifts in this regard. Some people observe cyanobacteria outbreak when they change their salt brand and blame their new salt, and some people get outbreaks when they start organic carbon dosing and some when they stopped dosing (or when they reduce dosing). Having read different scenarios and different treatments (successful/unsuccessful), nothing surprises me anymore. Nevertheless, dealing with cyanobacteria gives one a good opportunity to learn about different checks and balances that exist in his/her reef, which some reefers may take for granted. Every setback is a good learning opportunity. In my opinion, you become much more knowledgable if you devise a plan and execute it with patience rather than just dumping antibiotics (e.g. chemiclean) because you lose the opportunity to understand the biological boundaries of your reef tank.

Well.. This makes things a bit more..... Interesting.. I guess, since it's early into my zeozyme dosing, I will continue with it for a bit.. Along with the biomate.. If nothing changes with the cyano, or it continues to get worse, I'll try switching to plain coral snow..

Hey Matt, coral colours are looking good.

As far as the cyano is concerned, I dont find it surprising that its appeared; the pellets were doing their job. In their absence the filtration has been passed onto the rest of the system. It will take some weeks but in time it will subside.

At one point I used Zeolites to tweak nutrient levels...nutrients did start to reduce, and corals got pale. I didnt like the whole thing with dosing daily etc and removed the zeolites. Within a few days cyano appeared, but it went away on its own.

Some of the KZ products described can and do help; but the results are not always guaranteed as our systems differ. Thats why one person says use A+B and another says use B+C.

Anyway, now you just need to grow these corals so we can have a TOTM of your tank in the future. :)

Thanks, Sahin.. Yes.. Every mini environment is it's one microcosm.. Finding the right formula ain't easy!!
I think that I am going to try a little Redfield's experiment.. Since I am dosing nitrate right now to keep levels at around 5ppm and p is stable at .07, this is giving me a ratio of close to 70 to 1 for n to p. Redfield's ratio is 16/1 for n to p.
I will try dropping my n dose from 14 ml per day to 7ml per day, while testing levels regularly and watching for adverse reactions from the corals, in an attempt to get closer to Redfield's ratio..... I just want to see how the tank reacts to this.. I know Redfield's is not by any means a hard and fast target for a reef but I also don't think, with all of the fish and feeding I am doing, that it will be that bad for the corals... We shall see..

Lately, I have been playing with a photo editing app on my phone called snapseed. I use it a lot for non reef photos but I figured it try it out on some coral shots...
It is a very powerful tool for bringing out colours and giving shots more punch.... However it can also make the photos look quite surreal..
I am not trying to alter the actual colours of the coral but it certainly can make the colours much more intense..
I'll post before and after shots:here's a couple before shots of a mystery frag that is beginning to grow a bit more..
Two before shots:

After editing..

Another set.. Before:

After:

Here's a shot that I don't have a before for.. I deleted it by accident..

It's pretty cool.. But it definitely over accentuates the intensity of colour in the corals..

One more..

Ok... That was fun... I am not even that well versed in computers and this was all done on my iPhone.. No computers (pcs) involved.... So I can only imagine what could be done with REAL, truly powerful photo editing software........

Matt,

What is this Acropora's Latin name? I think I have exactly the same coral in my tank. When I bought it as a frag from a wild colony, it looked blue, and then turned brown/maroon, but is now changing its colour to pink and green as shown in your photos. I am really excited about this coral and am very astonished about its colour transformation, which was very unexpected.

Unfortunately, Bulent, this piece also came from a wild colony which I never saw. Even the owner of the store, where I bought it, doesn't know what it is..
I have posted pics of this coral before and I think that in the first pic I posted, there were light hints of blue at the encrusting base... I don't see the blue anymore...
Can you post a pic? I'd love to see it..

Ya bud next time we end up around your area will hit you up. Nice before and afters man u are doin a great job starting to look like a TOTM

Thanks, Dan. I am far far away from totm.. Far away..

And to be very clear...

The before and after shots on the last page were using EDITING ONLY. The before and after shots are the exact same shot... I don't want to mislead anybody..

Hey Matt. What kind of dosage do you use when using flourish nitrogen? Do you follow dosing on bottle? I am thinking of trying to raise my no3 to about 0.5 instead of reading 0

Looks like it's coming together nicely :)
Thanks! It's getting there.
Looks great Matt
Thanks, sprite. Thanks for dropping in.

Hey Mike.. That's tricky.. Dosing on bottle is not aplicable here..
I have 300 gallons and to keep my n at around 5ppm I am currently using 2 capfuls a day- about 14 ml. But each system is so different in terms of n consumption.. You should start off slow..
I think you have 200 gallons? It's going to be a bit of playing- adding and testing and repeat..
Try 3 ml and test 30 minutes later.. See if you get a reading. If you do, test again 24 hours later and see if you still have a reading. If not add same and see if you have a reading the following day... Go from there..

So I got a couple more shots.. :)
Like all of my frags, they do not grow out from the original tips, they encrust and grow from the base.. Never had that before but in this tank they almost all do it..

Closer up of that cool new frag I love.

I lost the other shot of this..

Purple rain still growing..

Matt.... I am going to throughout all my SPS. Those acros are speachless and I feel now that I only have crappie corals. :-(

I love that first one, in general the pics and corals are looking really good! I have a couple of corals that did that growing from the base only, I've heard that you can coax them to grow from the tip by clipping the tips.

Great pics and corals matt:eek1:
Especially the first one made me green like it's tips:p
Amazing job buddy:beer:

Dan, your tank is fantastic and thriving. Top down macro shots make just about any acro look amazing..
And thank you for the compliment!

I'll try that.. Interesting idea. I think one divided mentioned that in his write up.. I didn't really know what he was talking about..
Thanks, Matt!

Some stunning two/three coloured acros!!! Would love to get hold of some of those. :)

Thanks Sahin, I'd love to do a transatlantic swap with you!:)

Great pics and corals matt:eek1:

Lol. Mike, thank you! Appreciate it a lot.

Those are awesome... agree, the first one (pink with green tips) looks incredible.

Thanks Jordan..
Here's what it looked like when I got it. Fresh out of a ulns.. July 27

And Bulent, here's a shot of that frag you were talking about.. Back when it went in, also out of the same ulns.. July 12

Oh man, those are some nice looking frags, Beauties!

Thanks! :)

This is exactly how I have been feeling for some time. This feeling has intensified after the latest photos.

Sorry to make you feel that way...... Not... :)

Between Raging reef in Montreal and Fragbox in (or near) Toronto, I am very fortunate to have acces to some crazy nice pieces..
I recently picked up some very nice Fiji acros from Aquatica in Montreal as well.. Ill shoot them once they settle in a bit.
