Learning/rebuilding from my epic fail

Looking great Matt

Looking slick, love the evansi

Thanks, guys.
Unfortunately, the evansis continue to loose weight, even with the 14 cubes of food that go in the tank with two feedings. 3 seem to be healthy but the other 3 are losing weight.
I won't buy any more evansis, I have killed my share. I might go with bartlett's as they are similar looking and much less finicky about food.

Started reading this thread then watched the video a page or two back. Great tank. For the life of me though I can't figure out what those gorgeous pink/yellow fish you have shoaling are. Care to enlighten me?

Matt,
I love the video, it looks fantastic! Really shows the interaction between the fish and corals, looks like a real reef to me, very nice job man!
Cheers
Hey Perry, you must have sneaked this in while I was posting or something.. I just noticed it.
Thanks, man. I consider that a huge compliment. That's the ultimate goal, isn't it? To have what looks like a slice of the ocean in your living room (or basement, if you wife doesn't approve of the tank.. Like me)
The growth has been really good, in general and it's starting to have that grown in look... Except for the stubborn little frags that won't grow... Grr..

Thanks bfrench. They are Evansi Anthias. Very pretty and unfortunately, too finicky for me to keep them happy. I am down to 6 and I think ultimately only 3 will survive.

Bartlett's are beautiful too matt,great choice:thumbsup:
Have tried evansi's in the past.Every fish that came sick/weak/skinny never made it,even if eventually ate at some point.Something internal,as a poor guess:(
Fat/healthy ones where really strong.

How do the poop of the skinny ones, look like?

Your np rpo dose is the recommended for your tank volume or more?
I started seeing good results regarding my n reduction when i raised it.I was supposed to drop 6 and i only saw signs of reduction when i reached 10-11.
Just asking,in order to compare it with my case.

Still wondering too if micro E helps my tank in any way.
I was thinking that it might be more needed in tanks with no weekly-biweekly WC's but maybe it's a silly thought.

I really enjoyed the video you posted on the last page. You definitely have one of my favorite tanks. As it continues to fill in, it's just gonna get that much better.

Thanks, Dom!
Last year (before the oodinium zombie apocalypse) I had a trio of females, after about 8 months, one began to turn into a male.. Then, they all died.. I was not happy..
Dom, just get another female and enjoy the year of watching one turn into a male.
At first, they did not bother each other at all, now, the larger one periodically and without much malice at all, chases the smaller one..
I assume this is the 'dating' phase and the larger will soon start the change..:)
I can well imagine! That would have been devastating!! :(
I like your thinking lol I think another female will be the first new fish I add tot he tank as Dave has 3-4 amazing girls in at the moment!! :D I'm glad to hear yours went well, I'll break out the separation box for a week to socially adjust her to everyone as that usually works well :) Thanks for the info!

Ok, done. Officially I've read the whole thread. Lots of facts, ideas and experiences to learn from.

Thank you Matt and all thread contributors for your lessons.

I will always envy you for having this piece Matt and the colors you can hold on it........ i would kill those beautiful anthias in a day i reckon.........

The fluoro tips just make it special as hell to me :)

The whole display is looking very grown in very fast mate and has awesome depth due to the cool rock scape.

Hey Mike, i have had Bartlett's in the past and like them a lot but they are not quite as nice as evansis.. I have had the evansis for months, now, so I'm not sure it's internal issues, although they were pooing white streams before they died, it could just have been from lack of food in their guts.. either way, my luck is not good with them, so I'll stay away..

As for np pro, I think recommended is 1 drop per 25g- like most of their products. That means 12 drops for me.. At 12 drops, nutrients stopped rising and levelled off at n;6 and p;.13.
As of this morning, I have raised my dose to 16 drops, so I'll see where they go over the next two weeks and then act accordingly.. I am only now getting up to the level that you are using.
You could be right about MicroE.. I am only using a half dose- 6 drops per day in my 300g system.
I re read the directions for koralcolor and realized that I am only using 1/4 dose, so I have begun to double dose this - bringing it up to 1/2 daily dose..
I'll keep it there for another month before i really make any decisions..
I read about Andrew's test results coming back very high for copper and zinc, I think.
So far I'm not worried because I think (don't know) that my algae fuge probably uses many of the elements and mitigates the build up..
I'm not sure how far a weekly 10% wc goes towards balancing out trace element shortages or buildups..
Or, for that matter, how many of the specific elements contained in micro e or trace hard or koralcolor are actually in salt mixes.....

I really enjoyed the video you posted on the last page. You definitely have one of my favorite tanks. As it continues to fill in, it's just gonna get that much better.
Hey Conor, thank you very much and likewise! Your tank is a prime example of a beautifully proportioned and well grown in reef.
I can well imagine! That would have been devastating!! :(

Go for the girls, Dom! I have never once had any aggression issues amongst any of the bellus angels I have added to my tank over the years. I don't think the box is necessary, but it certainly can't hurt.
I'd consider getting another one if i could find a small one that didn't cost $150..

Sergi, I have been one RC for over a decade but really only had one build thread of my own. I have read many and I always try go go back to the beginning of any thread I am interested in because it can be so interesting to see how a build starts, grows and matures.
However, sometimes it can take a lot of patience and time to make it through the longer threads and mine is no walk in the park!
I consider it a real honour that you went back to the beginning and made it through the entire thread.
My hat goes off to you for spending the time and effort.
Thank you very much. :)
Do you have a build thread that I don't know about?
(please don't tell me you started a build thread in '02... :) )

Do you have any idea how painstaking it is to add that yellow rim in photoshop!?! It's just brutal!
Thanks for stopping in, Andrew! I have had some really good growth, lately, on many pieces.
I think I have discovered, however, why I have so many pieces that sit and stagnate for so long.. On top of the aefw, I'm pretty sure i have bugs as well...
treating for the bugs will kill my peppermint shrimp army which will leave me open to greater predation by the aefw, so I am going to have to time the interceptor treatment to coincide with the availability of a new army of peppermint shrimp.
I seem to recall anecdotal evidence that bugs will actually keep aefw at bay and once the bugs are killed off, people have experienced population explosions of eafw immediately following the bug treatment..
Always something to kill off in a reef- nuisance fish, nuisance algae, parasites.. whatever..... always something...
tabarnouche! (as we say in these here parts)

When I had aptasia- like I mean a total infestation of aptasia about a year and a half ago, I added peppermint shrimp and they totally eradicated the aptasia.
Completely gone.
Although, they may go after other anemones once in the system and hungry..

I'll gather an army then. I don't have any nems in this system so hopefully I'll be good.

I still believe that bugs and aefw are predominantly around and spread due to infected aquaculture. Ihtn almost three years and over 100 wild pieces i have never seen either nor ever in my previous tanks with probably another 200 wild pieces added in total years ago. It sh$ts me no end to constantly see my good mates on here who are great with acros constantly getting kicked in the guts by these pests Matt :(

I found adding the colors to my brown acro reef in photoshop took too long so i went back to food coloring dips again, you should give it some thought mate

The struggle is real. I thought I had it bad. I just discovered aptasia in my system.

Ahhhhhh ! i was supposed to grab some peppermint shrimp today now the wrasse caught a bus to hell - you should have reminded me earlier

Hi Matt,

my reef is not ready to be shown yet. It was set up last September and I've had several issues keeping corals, trying this and that, and failing. I was chasing numbers, high nitrates without any impact on the tank, but tryed hard to lower them anyway. Decreased feeding, ran biopellets, vinegar+vodka, -NPPro+ProBioS... Corals were dying after 2 weeks in my tank. Finally I decided to forget about nitrates and feeding the tank (fish and corals) more. It's now when I can keep corals in good shape. Now I am able to keep brown (or not so coloured) corals alive, and I'm very satisfied with it.

That's why I've enjoyed your thread so much. I enjoyed the pictures a lot (green of envy) but I enjoyed the discussion the most.

Can you recommend me any thread similar to yours?

I'm sold :) I'll get another girl then :) That might a little down the track as Dave is getting captive bred royal gramma's in and depending on the price I'm hoping for a pair of them!! :D
