Learning/rebuilding from my epic fail

Corals are looking awesome Matt!
How are you liking the Gyre?

Thanks! I have 3 gyres and I love them. All of mine have worked flawlessly for me.
They move huge amounts of water and they are very quiet with the new vibration reducing attachments.

No problem. I'll take an updated pic soon. It looks like it's about to take off, so I'll give it a month and see how it looks.

Hi Matt

My friend, the last 3 pages was an explosion of color. I just didn't read your thread for a couple of days and "O My God" those pictures, the colors and how healthy looks those acros is something from another planet.

I was reading all what you are adding to your reef tank and "mama mia". If I do that, I am sure I will crash my tank, that is way I try to keep it easy, among other causes.

Cheers and enjoy your vacation time !!!

Daniel

These pictures are simply amazing Matt. Mixture of colours is absolutely stunning. My favourite in this set is the third picture from the top. The colour of the plate provides a very nice contrast.

I have no idea why you are investigating different nutrient export methodologies when you have corals like these. I would say don't change anything and just keep going the same way.

Man your reef in such an inspiration for me. Do you not have issue when the corals start growing into each other? I think I may worry to much about this and should just let them do their thing.

Wow!!! Love this one a lot...Blue and green on same picture and still crystal clear of each color!!!.... and, there are red on fuzz background!!! You are an artist!

I need to re-arrange my coral colonies position accordingly ;-)

Shih, I missed your post from the last page.. I only noticed it while looking back and all the posts I have missed..
Thanks very much for the very nice complement. This hobby is as much about art as it is about science. That's what makes it so rewarding and interesting
But shih, you don't need to rearrange anything. Your tank is already beautiful.

Thanks Daniel. I got back last week but have been so busy, I haven't been able to really be on RC at all
I agree, it's a lot of stuff. I'm considering weaning the tank off of it all but at the same time, the tank is doing fairly well so now I don't want to...

I love the 'over time' shots. If you have any more feel free to postem. :)
Thanks, Mark. I just might do that. I haven't had time to take any new photos but posting growth compilations doesn't really require any..me felt I guess for a most recent shot.. We'll see. It is fun to but the shots back to back and see how a coral has grown.
Matt,
What on earth is your thread doing on PAGE 5? To me that means it's time for acro porn.
Good question! Just been so busy with more friends staying at the house, catching up on work after being away and now with the new dog in the house, it's like having a baby in the house. A cute fuzzy baby!

Thanks, Bulent, I am constantly battling elevated po4 (.10-.14). I'd really like to bring it down to, or just under .04.
In my most recent attempt at numbers chasing, I pushed my np pro dosage up to 25 drops per day. I did this while I was away. It resulted in all of my dragons getting spots of rtn and a few other corals that got stung also rtned at the base. I actually lost the pinkish red piece in the upper right of the photo you like because it got attacked by an encroaching coral. I have one remaining frag at the moment but I'm not sure it'll make it. Every time I push the tank with a Carbon source, I get rtn.. Even if nutrients don't get super low. But even with the heavy np pro dosing, p didn't budge.
I'm going to try dosing kalkwasser, I think and maybe go to goo.. Not sure yet.
This is why I am interested in your Tropic Marin system. It just seems simple, stable and effective...new shall see.

Dave, thank you very much! I really love to hear things like that. This tank has really gone from nothing and even worse than nothing and come a very long way. I'm pretty proud of it although I'm still struggling with good health in a good 30% of my corals, still have some cyano, bryopsis, bubble algae and not exactly the right colours on some pieces... But I am fairly happy with it.. This last little episode of rtn is bothering me though...
I have backed off to 20 drops np pro and begun adding my reef roids/reef pearls/reef vitality powdered mix again at night.
So unfortunately, I've been too busy to shot any acro porn but here's a bit of puppy porn..
Hopefully the acro porn will be back soon. Pics to follow

Puppy porn.

He loves hanging out in the shade of this Japanese maple.

Lounging in the kitchen.

And of course. He's been sleeping on me while I write these posts.. So.. Selfie :)

He's kinda won me over already.. Even though I will be up at 12 am, 3 am and 6 am to let him out to pee..

Woooahhhh! Thoes top downs show your deepwater off will well. Simply scrumptious! I envy your ability to keep them so well. I can't keep any because they get blasted apart by fish chasing food :( Your colors look solid man. What do you do for work if I may ask? Looks like an aquarium maintenance shirt you got on.

OMG Matt!

love the little pup!
man aren´t dogs the best? ^^

thanks for sharing!

Cheers
Thanks, Flo. He is extremely cute except at 3 am when he's whining to go out. And 5am.. Not so cut either.. Especially when I go out to the back yard to find a skunk wandering through the yard!
I then had to go out to the front yard in my underwear to let him pee. Luckily there weren't a lot of people around.
I can so relate. My 15 yr old sh***y poo ( shih'tzu/toy poodle) sleeps at my shoulder every night. Mans best friend! ☺
Hey Ward, my first dog used to come sleep with us- like 20 years ago but one night I had a bad dream or something and, in my sleep, I literally tossed her off the bed.. I think with a bit of effort.. She never came on the bed again.. I don't think she was thinking I was so friendly, then. We made up, though. I had to put her down at 17 years old when she was senile, incontinent, semi blind and deaf, and failing kidneys.. Saddest day of my life.. BUT enough about that! His new pup is undeniably cute!

Thanks Paul! I have a piece sitting on the sand, in a pile of cyano right now. I haven't had time to go in and get it and re glue it.. Grr..
The deep
Waters are definitely the most delicate. My latest rash of rtn affected mostly deep waters. I've never seen a coral more susceptible to random, incomplete rtn than the dragons... Usually happens the minute I try to pull nutrients down below 5ppm nitrate. Even with my p at around .1 all the time.
In general, I'm pretty happy with colour except for my GREEN Hawkins and a few others that just aren't right..
But I can't complain..
Yes, I bring my work home with me in a serious way. 22 years, now, in aquarium maintenance. Cliche story of a passion turning into a profession... Or, at least a career, we'll sort of a career... A living.. A very decent living.. Relatively speaking- when you look at it globally.. :)
Decent for an idiot like me who never had a clue what to do with his life...

I have had the same experience with rtn on deepwaters and nutrients. I wish I could make a decent living like that. I am a commercial plumber so that at least incorporates a couple aspects of our hobby, water, piping, and filtration in it. So that keeps me happy.

I'm really going to concentrate on po4 and leave my n alone- or try to keep it right around 4-5 ppm. Phosphate, I really want to pull down..
Might try dosing kalkwasser, to start..

I've done the odd job where I WISHED I was a plumber...
Not my favorite part of doing an install.. Luckily, I don't do too many big installations..

haha sounds like a lot of fun :lolspin:

but you get a lot of love back!!

Awesome photos Matt!
Doggie is too cute, great stuff :)
Your latest top downs are absolutely amazing, just pure class man!

Fantastic pictures Matt, I love the colors and the variety of acros, outstanding! Everything looks really healthy.

What lens are you using for the fish eye pics? They look great!
