lens rental

Going backpacking in the tetons and glacier this fall and I don't yet own a telephoto, so I am planning on renting one. I am looking at either the 300f4L or the 100-400 4.5-5.6L which would you suggest, this is mainly for nature birds/bear/elk.

also which sites have you used, I am looking at rentmylenses because they allow reservations. all seem priced pretty competitively.

I've not personally used any of those services but have read good first hand reviews on rentglass.com

Something to keep in mind a Prime lens will always be sharper than a Zoom. What about the 400 5.6 very sharp lens and lightweight

I've used borrowedlenses.com and had a good experience. I own a 100-400L and am very impressed with it for a zoom lens. I love its versatility and it is a very sharp zoom.

I was thinking about the 300is f4 plus the 1.4x. I have a feeling I wont be happy with the 1-400 zoom, maybe it would be fine, but on top of the zoom it being a rental would make me worry a bit about the use/abuse it has gotten.

while it will be an addl 40 bucks or something, i think having two lengths will be the best option. plus with the IS i may be able to hand hold at 300 and 420. Any last comments before I order?

Thanks for the help/comments.
