Leonardo's Formosa Forest

Gets my vote, though i really think it should be nominated for tank of the month.

Congrats leonardo.

I have a question about the trace elements. Can you add them directly to the 2 part and dose all that at once or do you dose it separately?

Thanks! It's a big honour and I'm very exited to be nominated!

About the "Balling-Method" trace-elements from Fauna Marin; they have to be added directly to the 2-part solutions. :) Will search for a link for you!

Leonardo,
I found this on the Fauna Marin site. Are you using any of the Trace B elements?

http://www.faunamarin.de/bedienungsanleitung/manual_balling-methode_eng.pdf

I did not see any A- or K+ on the website, although I have heard of them before.

You got it! That is the manual for the 2-part salts and elements from Fauna Marin. The trace-elements are called "Ultra trace B solutions" Thank you for finding it, I just got out of work (diff. time zone here) and was starting up the PC to seach it.

A- and K+ elements are from Tropic Marin. I use them at the moment, and I'm very pleased with the results. Because I want to automate my trace-element dosing and simultaneously automate my two-part I will probably swith to Fauna Marin.

Again, many thanks for the votes!

Leonardo,
Now I understand where my confusion was. I thought A- and K+ were Fauna Marin as well, but now I see they are Tropic Marin.

I will have to find a US dealer for Fauna Marin products. An RC sponsor said that it will special order it if needed.

Will you use all three trace b products?

I think I will, I want to have the complete range of trace-elements, and I'm going to use the Balling-method anyway :)

Sounds good. I may do the same. I plan on doing a 15% weekly water change, so I'm not 100% sure that I'll need the additional trace elements. It is very nice that it will work in addition to the 2 part solutions, so that I won't need to add additional supplements.

I just noticed that you add the iodine-flourine complex to can 2 which is the mg portion of the balling method. I was only planning on supplementing with mg, not running it all the time. Only Ca and Alk full time.

wow applause!! seems like there are ways to do anything

amazing... only 25 pounds?

Questions: Are you like a bio chemist or something lol

How do u know how much live rock is needed in a tank such as yours say 92 gallons and how did u know that amount was enough to satisfy the amount of bacteria needed to upkeep the parameters etc in your tank?

How did u know how much vodka / sugar to dose when u started dosing it?

Does your BB method basically rely on the skimmer to take out the materials before they break down as well as the frequent biweekly waterchanges?

Thanks Gary!:)

Thanks jmarti705 and DubDub!

Haha, I'm not a biochemist, I studied for Teacher in Biology. After that I studied for Real Estate Broker and next year I will start with Marine Biology at the University of Amsterdam.

When you rely on the skimmer as main export mechanism not much liverock is needed because the proteins will be skimmed out before they will become nitrite and nitrate.
Some nitrification always occur, therefore I installed a Remote DSB. That will process that small amount of nitrate.

Because a BB-tank immediately reacts to changes you make, you know almost immediately know the effects of your husbandry.
I started with a very small amount of Vodka/Sugar and gradually builed it up untill I thought the corals were becoming starved. The I knew the best dosing regimen related to my feeding and export. I cut back the dosing a little and now I have nutrient-poor water AND well fed corals.

I did the same thing for the skimming (wetter/drier) and trace-element addition. Just gradually changes+good observation.

Good documentation of changes you make (amount of ml per day/week, etc.) + carefull observation of the corals will give you the most ideal balance in the aquarium.

Thanks everyone for voting!

AWESOME TANK! GREAT THREAD!

Im about to start a 100 gal. 30x30x25 cube and your tank has giving me a ton of ideas! Just simply amazing tank..

I find it interesting you use a venturi skimmer, I assume its like my tunze 9020. Do you get much skimmate out of it and how do you think it compares to a needle wheel?

Tank looks great! Do you have a problem with coraline on your glass? I've been running about the same way... dosing, lighting, carbon source, and feeding but I seem to get crazy growth of coraline everywhere! I have an acrylic tank thats BB and dont mind on the bottom but on the sides and front is hard to clean off. I tried to go to 10K bulbs but still there. Just wondering what you do if anything?
Thanks Great Tank!! got my vote
