Leonardo's Lagoon

Yeah... but I just thought a 16" deep tank with a 14" water line, itd be deeper. Unless initial thoughts were to have a 12" deep tank all along.

You can also notice the red/white 30 Gallon vessel for the Calcium Reactor by-pass.
Don't mention the campy retro-chair in the back;)

And I thought the campy chair was going to be the permanent seating for the Lagoon :o

:p

On a more serious note... what will you be dosing with through the grotec III? Traditional Balling?

I really like the overflow... reminds me of KZ's system at InterZoo.

Hey what made you decided on the aqua connect bulbs iover the others? I was thinking about goin gwith them but i was told that the reeflux 12k was better what are your thoughts on that?
Michael

I did a comparison based on Sanjay s measurements, and the PPFD came out the highest with the AquaConnect bulbs (only compared 14.000K+ bulbs)
The reeflux 10.000 K came out much lower, so I think the 12.000 K will onlye be less then that. (no measurements for that one)

Besides that I like the Aquaconnect 250 WEatt DE bulbs that I use now, I recently replaced one of the two bulbs, and couldnt notice a color change after 1,5 year use.

the aqua connects almost 3x as long as the radiums and at least 6 months longer than reeflux. they are great bulbs with a really good spectrum (the single ended at least)

Plans were to have a waterheight of 12" from the beginning. I wanted to create such a shallow reef on purpose. I wanted it to have this look.
An extra 2" height for the wave will be enough. With only one wavebox it is hard to create a higher wave in this size tank.
For water movement I rely more on the 4 Tunze 6101, that will create more then enough flow in this shallow tank.
I dont know for sure if I will go BB again or that I will use some sand this time.

Placing the stand and aquarium will begin tomorrow. After that I will start with the high-gloss panels, installing equipment, and do the plumbing etc.

I personally love the extremely shallow tank. My display will be shallow (compared to most large tanks) with an 18" water depth. My prop tank will be only 10" deep and I'm really looking forward to it.

So it appears you had some problems with the FF because of the tight growth? I had that problem in my 50 cube and lost my tort because of it. Is everything doing well after you fragged them?

Also, Id like to hear more about your "cryptic refugium." Sorry if you described it somewhere else?

The 2 Tunze 6101 Streams couldn’t get enough flow between all the branches. After I fragged all the large branches and placed them in enough flow and light, everything is fine again. A wavebox could have been the solution for this problem.
Because I’m planning to have some very large colonies again, I have bought a Tunze wavebox.

The Cryptic Refugium will be described here later, also with photos. Here is a preview of the current Cryptic Refugium ;)

Leonardo, your shallow reef ideas and result motivated me to drop my water level down to 21" on 24" tall tank. I plan to have my frag tank 8-10" tall.... Thanks for the inspiration bro... Good luck with the build, look GREAT so far.....

WOW! Please elaborate more on your cryptic refugium! I've always wanted to set one of these up, but never tried. How did you design yours? How much flow do you have going through it? How did you get it started? Did you just buy live rock and let it sit in the dark? Please more info!

Thanks Chris! Water goes in within two/three weeks I hope.

Hatfielj, I will explain the design and give more info when I set up my new, larger Cryptic Refugium. I will give you all the info+photos then, to keep this thread more 'organised' :)
btw, the photo is just a close up of the Refugium, it is much larger ;)

Thanks Dougie!

Eric, I rather put this chair in front of the tank, if I could affort it :o

I will dose a 3-part vitamin and Trace Element mixture with the Grotech TECIII
Calcium and Alkalinity is provided by the Schuran Jetstream 2 and the Schuran Kalkwasser-reactor.

KZ also uses this kind of overflow. It has two benefits for me;

Because of the large overflow, surface skimming is much better then a traditional overflow.
Because of the large surface splashing noises from the wave (wavebox) will be less then a smaller overflow box.
