Leonardo's Lagoon

I will try to make a trailer when I start the new thread. Setup plans, design etc. ;)

Joost, I sold the purple Montipora and the Seriatopora Caliendrum. The M. Confusa and the Red M. Digitata will be chopped and integrated in the new aquascape.
I don't want the separate colony look like the Lagoon.

Paul, I'm sure the build will be a process that can't be planned before, especially the (rock)aquascape. But I hope you can give me some tips or guidelines that I can remember when I'm in the middle of the aquascaping process :)

When you got the best rock then everything will be easy.
When you do aquascaping.. please rest aquascap area for attach coral in each space.
(If you know what you put is very good?)
All high level of aquascap should not be in the same plane cause see dimension around.

I'm not good enough to tech you but I be willing to answer in your question.
:thumbsup:

Lately I noticed my corals were showing less growth and less vibrant colors. All parameters are in check, so an alarm rings in my head: AEFW

And yes, I found them, again. After 5 dips of Levamisole over a period of two months, I didn't get rid of them. Now, a few months later, their numbers are high enough again to spot the results.
Colonies with many egg clusters were thrown away immediately. Other heavy infected corals were dipped in TMPCC and Levamisole, and the eggs were scraped.

My precious Desalwii colonies, that would maybe not survive this very aggressive combination of dips, were left alone to be dipped in a all-coral 5 hour Levamisole dip later, which is less aggressive. Strangely enough the Desawii's didn't show any signs of AEFW.

In the bucket, after the dip I only found a few AEFW, a sign that my sixline wrasse keeps the population in check, but can't reach the AEFW in the center of the colonies.

Because one of my goals is that the new tank will be 100% pest free, I will perform a bi-weekly Levamisole dip for the next month(s).

:hmm3:

Sorry to hear those little buggers are still pestering you! At least they are "easier" to address while your in the holding and development stage that you're currently in, a resurgence of AEFW in the new system down the road would be so much more difficult to address and just a big set back morale wise. Good LucK!

Thanks Bax. I know I'm lucky that I found them in this stage. Treatment and quarantine is much easier now than within a few months with a new tank and the corals encrusted to the rockscape.

:( Sorry to hear that those pests are back but yeah, luckily they were caught before the new display was functioning. Please keep us apprised on your experiences, would be educational for me at least if I ever get them (knock on wood). Good luck.

Thanks for the reactions :) I'm setting up a treatment tank right now and have ordered some fresh Levamisole.

Jonathan, what are your experiences with Melafix? Is it able to really kill the AEFW in a dip, instead of stun them?

I'm thinking of trying some TLF Coral clean Revive between the Levamisole treatments as an extra dip. Any experiences (good/bad) with it? Can't just try a bottle because I'll have to ship it from the US.

Hello Leonardo, I too still use levamisole, but Revive is pretty darn impressive. I use it on all incoming corals now as it gets any critters to fall off within just a couple of minutes.

Okay, so I'll just stick with the long AEFW treatments with Levamisole (@50 ppm for 5 hours) because it will 100% kill al the AEFW, and use Revive to detect an infected colony before I add it to the display.

Mark, do you have any quarantine procedures for new colonies?

Good question regarding the Melafix. What I have seen in person is within a couple minutes, all FW at the bottom of the bucket imobilized. Whether they were truly dead, I really don't know. They sure appeared that way.

I have a good friend that was a multi-state rep. for AP and after I first saw the FW demonstration, I questioned him about it. Most importantly, did the company know about this effect, and why? He told me they had always known that it would kill FW, but just never marketed it for that.

Regardless of dead or stunned, it works quickly and seems to have little to no side effects for the corals. This to me is the crucial issue. IME, FW Exit has some effect, but for me, not 100%. TMPCC seems to work fine, but also not to the extent of Melafix, nor as quickly. And it definitely can negatively effect corals if you are dealing with a sensitive species, or leave it in too long, or at too high of a strength.

What I did, was a series of short (15 - 20 min) dips in both Melafix and TMPCC. Then QT and observe. The QT process is tough, particulalry if you don't have a decent sized established QT tank.

I have never tried the TLF product, but based on my experience with other things they make, I would say it would have a high probability of working. TLF IMO is a strong brand dedicated to high quality products.

Ive always used TMPCC. I have had numerous others recommend the TLF Revive. I will be picking some up next time it comes in ... it smells like Pine Sol!

You have a sharp eye John ;)

The measurements (43" x 43" x 26") are chosen according to the golden ratio. I did made round numbers (in cm) of the calculations to help the tank builder ;)

a = 65 cm
b = a*1.618 = 105,17 cm (rounded to 110 cm)

Very interesting Leonardo. I think I need to go back to school.
