Leonardo's Lagoon

In my next large tank, I will build it so the bottom cannot be seen.

Now that's a fascinating idea! Too bad a new build or me won't be possible for many years.

Good luck Leonardo. The shallow tanks are a specialized tank genre and I have never understood them. I do like looking at the pictures, but since they are specialized, they also limit the possiblities of the tank. Good luck with the future builds.

You're right Mark. Thank you.

Sorry to hear about the crash. Your tank have always inspired me. I sure the next tank will be as breath taking as the past two.

I understand! :) And to build a "bottomless" tank, you have to go deeper than most are willing to deal with. You would also have to limit the viewing pane size to create a window onto the reef.

PS: Got me thinking bout creatine now. If I remember correctly, all it was designed to do in humans is allow our bodies to oxygenate better no?

Creatine is made from amino acids by your body and I would assume serves as a nitrogen source just as amino acids do when dosed in reef tanks. Its physiological role is that of a high energy carrier molecule. It forms a high energy bond with ATP (source of energy for muscles) forming creatine phosphate, and thus serves as an energy reserve, able to donate a phosphate group to ADP and vice versa.

Leonardo! I just read your post on Ed's thread. :( Very sad news ...

I'm sure you know that you have been a motivating force for many of RC's aspiring reef keepers. In my opinion, your Formosa Forest broke new ground in the hobby. I hope not too many days go by before you're again immersed in matters SPS.

Since you seem to be saying goodbye, at least for a while, good luck with your studies and have a great time in China.

Thank you Tom... I know, it was hard to make the decision, but after the Formosa Forest it is difficult to create something that will give me the same pleasure and satisfaction.
That's why I take a step back to think about a new project and search for inspiration. Although the Formosa Forest was partially created during the build, it took me one year to develop that project. I hope I can come back with something similar.

Thanks for the kind words, and good luck with your beautiful project! (of course I will keep following it ;))

Dave, that is very nice to hear :) Good luck with the build and keep us updated (with a lot of photo's ;))

dieselgrk, you mean the period of lighting? 2x250 Watt Aqua Connect 14.000K DE MH for 8 hours, and 4x24 Watt T5 for 12 hours if I remember correctly... :)

Leonardo

that is exactly what i meant, thanks Leo. i have the same lighting setup. t5's are on for 12 and MH's for 6..... gonna increase that to 8 once the weather cools down. see if i notice any difference.

another question for you if you don't mind: you have ample experience with bare bottom, and more recently with shallow sand bed, which of the two do you prefer and what in your opinion are the pros and cons of both?

I'm sad to hear that you are closing your tank, I'm sure I'm not the only one ...

Your threads, formosa and the lagoon were mainly the threads that make me updates. A year ago, when I start my 110g, I didn't see your thread yet then after 1 month, I read your thread and since then, I had the idea to upgrade to something shallower and wider. I couldn't forget the idea and since this summer, I finally upgrade :D

I'm sure you won't be far from the hobby for to long and your next projet is gonna be another amazing one :D

Good luck in your study and I cannot wait for your new project to start ! Hopefully it will not give me ideas to upgrade again hahaha

I'm still a fan of BB. My next tank will definitely will be one without sand.
It allows me to direct flow where I want, without worrying about sandstorms.
Next to that I noticed a smaller ALK uptake without a sandbed, which saves me $$ in balling salts (in heavy stocked +180G tanks you use a lot of salts)
And the most important for me is more direct control of the tank; With a sandbed I notice that most of the alternations in feeding, removing POM and DOM etc. are reacting much slower and indirect. Of course changes have to be made slow, but I like the strings to be short and direct.
I'm also getting nervous by the idea that food and detritus is constantly accumulating in the sandbed, and have to be removed manually (it can never be removed for 100% of course)
The only pro's of a sandbed for me are, more biodiversity (mostly in bacteria, I never saw a creature in the sandbed that I didn't see in my BB) and the ability to keep more, interesting fish and invertebrates that live in the sand. Next to that, most of the times it just look better :)

This is my opinion and my experience. I would advise you, try both, and see what you like best and what suits your tank :)

I saw a huge increase in color and growth after reducing my MH for an hour a day in the Lagoon, so more isn't always better. But give it a try, and see what you experience.

 I will try! Thank you for the kind words. I'm following your thread and it has a lot of potential, I'm sure it's gonna look great.
I hope I will be back soon with a new perspective and a lot of ideas :)

I still have to pass some exams for my BBA (Bachelor Business Administration) before I graduate, and I hope I can finish this study in January, wish me luck! :)

Leonardo.

So sad to hear about the tear down. Your tank(s) have been a true inspiration and motivation for me and others. I'm currently setting up a 100cmx80cmx30cm tank with your tanks amongst the inspirations.

I'm looking forward to the day when you start up your new project and wish you luck until then. :)

PS: Got me thinking bout creatine now. If I remember correctly, all it was designed to do in humans is allow our bodies to oxygenate better no? If correct, how does that translate to sponge growth? How does it incorporate into the sponge? What about corals?

Correction to my statement...realized after I was confusing creatine with cytomax! Ooops!

Too bad my last posts here are gone, I really appreciated the comments.

Adddo, Thanks you and good luck with your build. I will be back with a new project! :)
