Leopard Wrasse

Grizzled & Cynical
I have successfully kept wrasses in my reef tank, currently with a Dusky. How difficult are Leopards really? LA has them as 'expert only' but could somebody with direct, successful experience offer a few pointers?

Hardest part is shipping IME. They've arrived less than 50% healthy for me and I can usually tell right away if they're gonna make it or not.

Many say not to QT them but my experience has been the opposite. A nice calm place by themselves is exactly what they need after their travels. Make sure they have a nice pile of sand, one corner of the QT is plenty. Just make sure it's a few inches thick.

They will almost always show up with their days and night mixed up and it takes them a while to adapt to the new schedule. At first they may come out just a couple hours a day and will hunt for pods. It's important that they aren't bullied by other fish at this time cause they need to eat and if they are forced back in the sand it won't happen. In a QT setting pods will most likely be limited so live brine can be of good use.

They will normally take to eating mysis shrimp right off the bat and is a great start for them if possible. Be prepared to watch for them to be out and about after hours and offer them a snack if you can.

+a million. I wish I had used an acclimation box for a few days with sand like I did for my H. iridis wrasse. She was eating mysis, but could not out compete the rest of my fish for food and then dissapeared after a couple weeks.

Next leopard is getting a few weeks to fatten up.

I would make sure they are eating well before DT bc they are shy and may not fight for food- I have a red tail tamarin and a leopard and both were picked up locally.
Shipping is the risk

This^^^^! Once acclimated they are very easy to care for.

I took a gamble with mine. got him from LFS (he was there for 2 weeks) and went directly from FW bath to Main Display. Luckily she was super healthy and ate frozens (mysis, roggers) the first day of getting her. Now she is sooo fat and is the biggest pig in my tank. I've had her for about 10 months so far.
I would recommend QT them when you first get them to acclimate them and treat for diseases, etc. But I got mine from a really good store that shows off their acclimating tanks when u ask them about the health of the fish.

I think Prazi right off the bat is also key. I don't have a ton of experience though. But I am on attempt #10 and 11. About the first 5 (tried a couple from LFS), then a small group from bluezoo that arrived mostly doa except one, and got credit except the one. I tried to get eating healthy first and he died within a week eating well. My next order was 6 all at once, and dosed prazi on day 2 after losing 2 doa's and 2 very shortly after arrival. The remaining 2 are on week 4 I think now. One looks great. The other eats ok live blackworms, brine, and mysis but continues to los weight and swims funny. I started a third dose of prazi yesterday in case he still has some internal worms that survived the first two.

I have them alone, in a qt built for them, with sand and LR loaded with pods. I'm probly throwing in the towel if these last 2 don't make it, but I'm pretty sure I will have at least one. The other guy is iffy at best. Most deaths were DOA or very shortly after. And I match SG to whatever they arrive in when they get here.
