untamed - the SPS generally do feed off fish poop, so that makes sense. I plan to feed rotifers, dts oyster eggs and reef chili on occasion to make sure the SPS are getting some nutrition other than artificial sun.

Hey Mike it's more sad every day. We (me&my lovely better half) especially liked your old royal gramma (huge and old), what a waste, sorry to hear that.
Ahh this hobby is supposed to make you happy, stress free...

I am trying to stay positive...I'm going to try and take a step back and slow down. Enjoy the summer, keep the tank stable, and when I feel its safe, add more fish. It looks like the christmas wrasse and one anthias are going to make it. They look disease free now. The thing is, I'm hesitant to add more fish without QTing those guys first, and letting the tank lay fallow so I know the ich/velvet is out of the system.

So i really like the new aquascape on my left side (left the right side as is), and dont want to tear it down. Any suggestions for catching these guys? I tried the food in the soda bottle trick and it didn't seem to work...

Can you try and block the fish out with a net across the width of the tank? That will at least allow you to work with one 1/2 of the tank, or less.

I dont know if my methods are necessarily the best for catching fish Mike, but they usually work. I get a net, and leave it sitting in the tank, so they get used to it, knowing its not a thread. During that time, I dont feed em that day, and maybe even the next day. Then when Im ready to feed, I let my arm sit in the tank for a good 3-5 minutes. Feed them, make sure its like a flake that sits on top. Just come underneath them and lift them out. The bigger the net the better the chances obviously.

They sell Red colored nets now that the fish can't see because of the spectrum of light. You might want to see if your LFS carries them.

Whoever thought of that, is a very intelligent person lol.

in my experience, they don't work any better. the fish see them as "black". it's a marketing thing...

Snapped a few pics of the almost fish-less tank and the new left side aquascape. I need to take some better pics when the sun isn't creating a glare, but you get the idea...

Lookin good still Mike. Im going to steal your aquascaping (again) and I think Im going to take some rocks out, and make a tower towards the center of the tank. I know the tank will just bounce back to better than it was before. At least the beautiful corals you have didnt become affected by the disease...

Jflip - thanks much. I'll swing by your thread to check out the updated scape. I think a little less rock should look good.

Untamed - thanks for the links. reading the fishvet link, makes me all the more certain the outbreak was velvet. I definitely saw ich too, but I think it took hold because the velvet weakened the fish. Fortunately the 2 remaining fish look to have beat the velvet. I'm still going to wait another 5 weeks before I add anything else to the tank.

Are all the fish out of the display now Mike?

No, only two fish lived, the christmas wrasse and one bartletts anthias, they are still in the display. I'm going to give catching them and QTing them another try this weekend. They seem fine and healthy. I guess the question is whether leaving those two in the tank will keep the velvet spores alive. From what I'm reading, fish who survive velvet develop an immunity to it, so I'm thinking if they are immune the velvet will die out. I'll try to remove them to be on the safe side, but if I can't my plan is to add a fairly hardy fish to the system in about 4-5 weeks (QTing them first of course), if they do ok I'll know the velvet is gone, and if not, well, I guess I'll have to resort to whatever measures are necessary at that point to get the fish out of there and let the tank lay fallow.

I don't know anything about velvet but as far as ich I'm pretty sure if you keep those fish in the tank you're not going to get rid of it.
It would be a shame to put your future fish through an extensive QT just to hit the main display that still has ich!
