A few things to update, one bad, two good.

First the bad. As I mentioned I've had an ich outbreak, that I think today might be getting better, but its gone on this whole week, which has me worried (normally when I see some spots, they are gone in a day or two). If it is not gone by this weekend, I think I'm going to have to suck it up, remove the rock, and catch the fish so I can treat them with copper.

So now the good. The new bulb combo and reduced photoperiod with all bulbs on seems to be getting my colors back. I'm starting to see improvement and getting back towards the deeper colors I liked in my old tank. I really think I had TOO much light, whowouldathunkit... I think the T5s were actually giving me too much PAR.

And, I had hoped maybe I could snag a fish or two without breaking down the rockwork, so I made water for a QT. Since I couldn't catch any fish, I went ahead and used the water to fill up the frag tank....low and behold, no leaks! :) Heres a few pics:

Sorry to hear about the ich!!!

I have had dreams of catching fish without moving rocks before.... I had similar results. :)

Frag tank is looking good though.

I have ich. I don't think it is worth trying to fix. In my case, only the Achilles and Lookdown seem to show any symptoms. The others seem immune.

Sucks about the ich, hopefully that PBT pulls through it. If the garlic doesnt fix it, I dunno what will with him. Hes not supposed to be in contact with copper.

To hijack your thread mike, I have a new rock layout ;)

I've had the worst luck with ich and Acanthurus tangs. My PBT just died from it and I lost an Achilles a while back. My Yellow Tangs don't seem to be affected at all.

The problem is it happens very quickly. They have ich, they beat it, get it again, beat it. You get to the point where you're used to it and think the fish can handle anything and wham, you wake up and the fish is completely covered and it doesn't make it.

Frag tank looks great Mike!

would running a UV sterilizer help... couldn't you just run it once you see the ich until it has run its course or would that be too late?

Pat - That experience is why Im seriously considering the drill where I QT all fish and let the tank go fishless for 5 weeks.

the PBT is actually doing great, its the swallowtail angel I added a few weeks ago and the gramma that are being hit the hardest.

I don't know what I would do in your situation.

What sized QT tank do you have?

I have a 20G L and a 50G Rubbermaid Tub. It won't be that pleasant having a 50G tub in my bedroom for a month, but I could deal with it...

Mcliffy,
I was originally following along on your build, and then I lost the thread. Until I saw the FTW shot of your tank in the Modern Aquariums thread. Looks great. I really like the total package you have completed.

I'll have to show my wife your pictures for our next house. Maybe we can do something similar.

chrisrush - thanks much. Post here when you start the build thread in the new house, looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Stumbled upon your tank pic in the Modern Reef thread, before I knew it I was spending the last few hours sifting through your thread marveling. Absolutely beautiful set up! How do you like the Sfiligoi fixture? I've been keeping my eyes out for the Stealth w/ dimmable LEDs ever since seeing a pic, but no luck of finding out the release date. How did you acquire one if you don't mind me asking?

I have a 60g cube setup right now. I downsized from a 120 after I had some issues with the SPS in the tank. Click on my red house to see my thread.

I showed my wife you last full room shot and she was very impressed. She really liked the contrast b/w the tank and the rest of the room.

Chrisrush - I'll check it out a little later, gotta run and try and nab an iphone now :)

kigs - I got mine thru AO when I purchased my tank (they special order each unit from Italy), it is the old version that is not dimmable and no LEDs. I am very impressed by the light the unit puts out and it is quite nice looking. All else being equal tho, I might have gone with a powermodule if they made a 12x54w version, after reading Putayawet and Fliger's experiences with Sfiligoi's customer service. But other than that fear if something were to go wrong, my unit has been working wonderfully and kicking out crazy PAR.

And I have a sad update....my swallowtail did not make it through the night. I wont be able to tear down the rockwork to get the fish out until Saturday, so I'm crossing my fingers the rest make it til then. Most are still eating with fervor, but are not looking very hot. My only question is what to do with the special need fish. I don't think 4-5 weeks in QT would be good for a mandarin, and the tilefish (and diamond gobies) need sand. They arent infected, but could they still host the ich? I want it out of my system if I'm going to do this....

Generally mandarin fish aren't affected by ich b/c of the slime layer on there bodies. If you had one that was eating pellets, it might be a different story, but if yours is a live feeder, keep it in the display.

for the sand borrowers, can you put a little sand box in the QT tank?

Sorry to hear about your swallowtail btw.

Good luck with the iPhone, I tried to get one through work, but they won't support it.

I think you are lucky you didnt order the powermodul mcliffy.... I ordered mine from reefgeek in February and I am STILL waiting :) lucky its for my frag tank which is temprarily being used as my fish-QT since I am not going to get any corals yet.

just got an email saying 2-4 weeks from Greg, but thats what the original time estimate was

Whoa, guess I may have to change my recommendation then. Although I think stealth's like mine arent available anymore, and the new ones arent yet either, so T5 options are kinda limited...

chrisrush - I could put sand in the QT, but that is where the ich spores live, so I would be transporting spores to the QT tank, and really don't want to do that, maybe I'll post in the disease forum and see what they say.
