Let's see pics of VHO only tanks!

wow. this thread is great!!!. It's exactly whey 55, but that was about it. Know I know I want 2 Super Actinics, 1 50/50, 10 aquasun. I know what corals will do good/look good. A couple questions though...

1) What order should I put my 4 lights in? Front to back....
2) What are some good corals that 'glow' under just actinic lights?

Great pics everyone. I stumbled accross a long thread that had several people experiencing incidents of fire from their VHO waterproof endcaps. I just purchased a VHO retrofit kit with waterproof encaps and am now worried and I do not even have them yet. Have any of you long time VHO users experienced this issue or have preventative advice? Kinda scary to think about............

Great thread. Here's my VHO 150 gallon setup. The entire thread can be found here:

That's an incredible tank.   I love it. Are all those corals pretty easy to care for? I am setting up my 55 as a reef, and I'm lookin for easy corals.:)

Thanks! :) Yes, all those corals are super easy to care for. The only drawback to some of them is the staggering growth and subsequent fragging I must do to keep them in check. Besides that, I don't mess with it.

Nice jdsban1! It is great to see a really nice tank that is not SPS dominated. I miss all the movment and character you get in a mixed system.

Here is a new "artsy" photo of my 120 VHO lit tank...

pi, thanks!

As you know, your tank was my inspiration and should be considered THE defacto standard for all VHO tanks IMO. Still one of my favorite reef tanks ever.

how long should I run my lights for during the day?

12 hours is a pretty standard norm. you will find a very wide range of input on this one but to summarize, most people (I would guess 85%+) have their VHO lights on for 10-12 hours per day. Mine are on for 12 and that is what I have used as a photoperiod for the last ~2 years.

pi. what setup of light you have in your 120g. i will be setting up a 120g SPS dominant reef but im going with VHOs

how do you all get such nice pictures of your tanks? I got my VHO's installed, but i don't have pics that are worth showing.:(

Just wanted to bump this thread up again, cause it's full of great stuff. Wanted to pose a question too. What kind of distance does everyone have from their bulbs to the water surface? I have 330W over my 75, and am debating whether or not to add more. They are also 8"-10" off of the water. I imagine if I move them closer, it would be beneficial, but how close? I also need to be able to get my arm in there!

Well, that's my plan. I have mostly softies and some LPS, which is my main focus. I do have a couple of Monti. Capiricornus, which are actually doing ok, but I now they would like more light.

I keep my bulbs about 3" off of the water surface. They lay on top of the cloded loop plumbing and I ca easily stack them on top of each other to access the tank.

Thx,

Scott
