Yep, it's official. I'm a lurker. :D

And a finger pointer!!!

I'm keeping detailed records as time goes on....when it's been a significant space of time, I'll write it all up :D

Greetings All !

... Mesocosm is killing me now for asking for simple answers, I'm sure of it. ;)
ROTFL ! ...

In recognition of the superb presentation you gave at MAX last weekend, I've decided to let it pass ... this time. :D

I will be somewhere else along the voyage a month from now (definitely proprietary AA's and maybe zeolitic stones).

Why bother? I think you're doing fine with your own homemade regime.........more infomative & less costly. No reason to get swept away by a plethora of products that won't do anything but lighten your pocketbook...........they carry no majic bullets.

The key to me is you feeding heavily to corals that were washed out & starved. The vodka serves as a nice and simple controllable export method, but I would have liked to have seen what would have happend if you fed more & did less water changes under your previous export methods.

Either way, nice job.

miwoodar,

Nice write up. I'm not sure how you made yours, but I hear you on the DIY amino... not worth it for single batches, possibly even in multiple batches as well

How much LR and sand do you have in your system?

miwoodar, i just finished reading that thread about culturing bacteria. You say that you use it as food for your corals? Is it also suppose to seed the tank with bacteria? Im still sort of confused about its concept.

Maybe 75 lbs. It looks like a lot more because I have a PVC/Great Stuff structure underneath.

Right - Scoob did his to bring down uncontrollable nitrates. Indeed, I twisted his plan to fit my intentions. I saw it as an easy way to give my tank a boosted population of (hopefully) nitrate reducing bacteria. I also thought that the corals would get plenty of opportunity to eat it prior to settling in the tank. Tanks that run stones can feed mulm. I couldn't so I figured bacteria and detritus might be a worthy or temporary substitute. Dunno if any of this is worth the speculation but it seamed logical enough to me to go ahead and give it a try.

Were you there?

That is exactly what I was thinking in my head miwoodar. When I was reading through the thread, I was thinking, hmmm this reminds me of the zeovit mulm concept.

Did we meet face to face? That was sneaky if you did. ;) I didn't even know your location (left blank here on RC); it would have been nice to find out who you were.

BigE - Actually, my inclination says that I could have fed more without the carbon dosing and maintained the NDs on my hobby grade PO4 kits and NO3 kits. I say this because I started pounding the tank with food from day one in this experiment but my initial doses of carbon were on the order of .2 mL/day using a dilluted solution. And yet, I didn't see any of the usual byproduct spikes. I doubt I could have maintained such heavy feedings long term without the increases in carbon dosing though. From all of my experiences in this hobby (the good, the bad, and the ugly), I believe I could have found a middle ground on the feedings without the need for carbon dosing. The carbon dosing makes it so much easier though and I now feel confident that I can feed wrecklessly and not experience the typical consequences.

Mike, I'm with you on this... the amount of food that you can dump into these systems is pretty amazing to say the least. I agree, we could feed more without dosing carbon and still maintain healthy params....

Not knowing what the RR is for acroporids, I'd say this 'excess' feeding really does kick start the grow of most of the corals, similar to pappone. So whether a particular system is N or P or Fe limited, all that extra feeding makes up for any deficiencies, and the additional bacteria load from carbon dosing, helps keep things in line as well....

With the photometer you are getting, did you get the organic phosphate test as well as the inorganic? How about Iron?

I'm going to call HACH to see what they would advise for my needs. If you know of any that I should discuss, I'm all ears. I hadn't considered iron but that could be interesting.

BigE - I missed your point about the water changes. My last one was in January. The last one prior to that was June or July.

Hehe ... you were close enough, several times, that you could have knocked my baseball cap off if you'd wanted. You might recall me, but probably not ... I was the only guy taking notes during Fenner's presentation. :eek1: ;)

I actually came close to introducing myself a couple of times, but given the constant stream of folks that you were bombarded with, I figured you didn't need anymore entertainment ...
