I'm going to be running my 1st sump here shortly but I'm looking for a very quiet return pump and pump for my Lifereef Skimmer.

Which brand would be suitable and quiet? I heard Quiet Ones are decent... is that what I should go with?

Does anyone have one they want to sell?

Thanks

Submersible? External?

Total water volume?
Reef biotype?
Flow rate you'd like to achieve?

We'll get ya hooked up!

Oye. So many questions! Where do I start?

Probably submersible? 1st sump, not sure how I'd know which way to go.

Sump will be 10-30G so I'm looking at about 100-120G.
Full Reef. Mostly LPS, a little SPS but not a ton.

Really don't know on the flow rate. Need some pointers there.

I used an eheim 1262 with my 90 display with the 30 gallon sump underneath. The pump was reliable and quiet. I'd recommend it.

How big are the display tank and sump? What else will you have on the system as far as equipment? Will the sump be under the stand or in some remote location? How much flow does the skimmer need? What sort of overflow will be in the display tank?

90G RR tank 48x21x18? With Corner Overflow
Sump - Likely a 30G
Skimmer - Lifereef VS2-24 600/1200 GPH Recommended I believe.
Sump will be under Stand.

If you care about noise level you'll be practically limited by the single corner overflow. For the main return pump I'd look at something like a Quiet One 3000 (or even a 2200) or a Mag 7. Personally I like the Quiet One pumps a little more though Mag pumps have a really good track record.

For the skimmer, you'll need something with a fair amount of head. Looks like manufacturer suggests a mag 9. If you're looking for alternatives you could go with a Quiet One 4000.

I used a quiet one 4000 for a long time...no issue. I now use a Sicce 3.0. Super quiet and pumps some serious water. Also has the ability to control the flow right on the pump without adding a valve....

Been running a couple Quiet One 4000 for about 4 years now. Absolutely no porblems and you can't even tell they on. I'd certainly buy them again. - Mark

90 gallon tank - aim for 3 to 5x turnover - so 450 GPH.

on a standard setup you should be under 5 feet of vertical head - head loss calculator puts the quiet one 3000 and 523 with 1" pipe (the 1" is important).

The eheims are probably a bit better quality and i heard they are super quiet - could you notice a difference, hard to say.

Looking at the marinedepot charts the ehiem 1260 looks like it falls short, and the 1262 is more than you need.

I can't find them online anywhere at this time (everyone's out of stock), but if you decide to go external, you won't find a quieter pump than the Velocity T4. Whisper quiet and super reliable.

I have the same size setup I use a mag pump. Its not to loud but I can hear it run. Leads me to believe there are quieter pumps out there. If this is your first sump. One thing you should look into is how your going to quiet your overflow. This took me the longest on my first sump. Theres the durso method and what I believe is the "Herbie" method, which involves two drain pipes. But I believe the Herbie method is the quietest

I found a great price on a Eheim 1262 so I picked one of those up for it to be used as the return pump. Ben recommended it and I've personally seen his systems and his setups and for $75 shipped I felt that would be a solid option.

Think the Quiet One 3000/4000 will be my best bet for the skimmer pump?

I just found a good deal on a Quiet One 3000.

Or could I flop and use the Eheim 1262 as the skimmer pump and the Quiet One 3000 as a return?
