Leds, t5s, vhos, not using mh trying to keep tep bill down will leds penetrate 30 or 36 inches deep. Can leds grow sps like they say? Also they say 50000 hours thats 11 and a half years at 12 hours a day

LED bulbs itself will last that long, but the hardware around the LED will fail within 4-5 years because of corrosion and other factors. i like LED but every tank i see them on, ppl need like one or two more fixtures, or theres a dark area on the tank.

i think you should do a tank with 6 VHO's! way bomb color

I would go with a tank shallower than 36" if you dont want to use halides. I just switched to T-5s on my 125 and love em though. You could always load the bottom half up with LPS.

If your ever near Tempe check out Reef Culture's display tank. The 50w LED photon cannons could seriously burn a hole in the floor. And they have them mounted in the ceiling!

I love my LEDs but am still struggling with the hardware. There's a story...

But first, our corals have had terrific growth with an older Solaris. I know now that this is meaningless, but when we bought it (craigslist), the guy said it was a "300 watt." We do need to keep the SPS in the top third of the tank which can be a drag, and I do want to upgrade. I'm going to be shopping because you can't beat LEDs for power use, low heat, and you still get some shimmer lines due to point source light. We actually got a little too enthusiastic and bleached some of our SPS by having too long a photo period. (They are recovering.)

Now if you care to hear a tale of woe, one of our ballasts went out a couple of months ago. A very nice guy rebuilt both of them but one refuses to work so we are still not using our Solaris - only half of the light works currently.

Soooo if anyone falls in love with an LED that won't require a second mortgage, do tell!
