Lightsluvr's 340G Upgrade

I have a tip on screen shots in case anyone is interested. As was posted earlier, the common way to do a screenshot is to hold down control then select 'prt scr' Another way, is to hold down 'alt' and select 'prt scr'. If you select the window (just click on the title bar of the window you are interested in) and then do the alt + prt scr, it will copy only the window selected, not the enitre screen. Very cool I think.

Control + Printscreen method

'Alt' method

Thanks!

Thanks!

Great tip - thanks Brad!

The fish in the picture is a Bangaii Cardinalfish... one of our first fish friends... we have had him almost two years. I could be wrong, but I don't think they are seen in waters around the U.S. - they are named after an island in the Indo-Pacific area, where they are commonly found...

Looks like your loving your Apex. Makes me wonder is I should get one. BTW congrats and the split!

Yes I am enjoying it... I tried to make the install too complicated. It was very easy, and there is a lot of knowledgeable help over on the RC Neptune Sponsor forum.

This was our first controller, and if I can figure it out, anyone can.

Thanks for the congrats. I appreciate your tagging along.

Tank looks awesome George!

The top doors and tile pretty much finished it off...outstanding!

Thanks, Darien. It does look much nicer with the upper panels in place. The eyes are drawn to the tank instead of the lights above the tank... It turned out very nice.

I couldn't have done it without you, dude.

That panel work really males the tank. You have one very beautiful chunk of the reef (and a good sized one at that!) sitting in your living room. I bet that big *** TV of yours never gets any love anymore, does it?

Very nice work, George. It's nice to see it all really come together.

I didn't really think it was the Bangaii, fin structure was different, and probably bigger. But it may have been the Atlantic Spadefish

I also observed several sting ray as well as a few dolphins. It was very cool.

Cool, I didn't know that that trick, which I need all the time!

Why I love glass cages...

Why I love glass cages...

OK - so I bought a brand new 40G frag tank from a local reefer... He had ordered it from glasscages.com about a year or so ago, but decided not to set it up. It sat in a closet in his home until I brought it home a few weeks ago...

I inspected it, and except for some major sloppy silicone work, it looked like it would do its job - to hold water...

This afternoon, I decided to bring it in the fish room and plumb it into the main system... simple job, right?

Then something in the back of my pointy head said, "Water test it outside"

So I did.

After about an inch of water, a leak showed up along a front lower seam...

GC2.jpg

Then I noticed what appeared to water getting under those cheesy looking "reinforcing" pieces along the bottom edges...All over the tank...
GC4.jpg

And a second leak showed up on the right side of the tank:

More evidence that water was under the strips, between them and the corner edges...

What the %$#@ ?? It will be a major PIA, if not impossibility to assure that recaulking the entire tank will be satisfactory, because of the water trapped between the strips and the tank walls and bottom...

A picture is worth a thousand words...and that's why I love glass cages...it's like a box of chocolates... JME.

wow george,
i really don't know how i would handle it. my first reaction would be to thro it across the back yard. rant and rave.

I got my rant over. I have an unopened tube of All Glass Aquarium silicone that I'm going to waste on this POS. It won't leak when I'm done with it... ;)

Like I said when I brought it home, it's meant to hold frags and water...it doesn't have to be pretty... (and it ain't) :smokin:

All's good.

i don't know how to say this with out sounding condescending. knowing you i'm shocked you didn't water test as soon as you brought it home.

George, sorry to hear about your frag tank...
I guess this is why they have such a bad reptutaion.

I hope I don't have the same problem, my tank is from there.

Wow...that makes me seem like a big meanie or something ;)

Oh, the 90 day GC "warranty" was long gone anyway, so no point in whining over it - the original owner bought it new, so he got screwed too - he just didn't know it... :D

I'm going to wait until the tank is in the shade and then give it a good caulking... I'll wet test it again tomorrow.

What's amazing is if you really look closely at the seams, they actually put the tank together with chipped glass in the corners... how good is that?

Did they put those little glass strips in the joints of your big tank? I thought I remembered seeing them in your broken overflow photos and wondered to myself what purpose they served...maybe I was dreaming... ;)

You'd think if they were going to use them as strengthening (or whatever), they would silicone between the two pieces of glass...

Like I said, it's only a 40G and still very usable - just a shame that a new tank is thrown together like that... it must have been made on a Monday or Friday. :D

Hmmm...

Anal:
(ayn-l)

"A popular term for 'anal retentive personality,' a personality marked by excessive orderliness, extreme meticulousness, and often suspicion and reserve. According to psychoanalysis, an anal personality is formed in early childhood as a result of efforts to control bowel movements."

You've seen my house... excessive orderliness??? You've mistaken me for someone else...

I know it's past the warranty, and I am for sure not one that wants to get stressed over things for nothing, but...if you read their warranty "If the aquarium is defective within ninety (90) days from the date of purchase, return it to Glasscages.com LLC, along with sales receipt. Provided the aquarium has no broken or chipped glass or altered sealant, Glasscages.com LLC, will replace the aquarium at no charge, shipping not included.
"

I would still want to send the company president/CEO pictures of the chipped edges...maybe someone will listen and strengthen their QC department just a little... If it is presented to them as a point of concern, instead of contention, maybe just maybe something good would come from it...:fun5:
