One of my favorite Acan colonies got upended by a Turbo snail bulldozer yesterday and wound up upside down on a zoa covered rock... Let me testify that the zoas are tough - they pretty well messed up about half of the acans, which were really bleached out and stressed. Not sure if most of the heads will recover...

Damn turbos... even stronger than epoxy!

That's a bummer!! I have never had turbos, and not sure I want one either...:eek1:

Sorry to hear about your acans George.
I know that zoas can carry a powerful punch!
Try to place your acans in an area with good flow, not a turbo kind of flow, they might recover.

That stinks! Sorry to hear about the loss of awesome coral like this, no matter who's and what tank was in.

Amazing what zoas can do to an acan colony. As Sandy suggested, I've got them in some good flow, so hopefully they'll recover...

Yeah Turbos should be name bulldozer - I also had a turbo incident a couple of weeks back where they bulldoze my acan onto my deepwater pieces and cause a round TN where the acan landed !!

Update -

Update -

I completely re-siliconed every nook and cranny of the 24x24x12 GC frag tank, and it finally passed a wet test...

I brought it into the fish room and now trying to decide where to build the stand. It will be plumbed into the main tank system, which usually means that I must use a pump to supply the return and let the overflow dump into one of the sumps...

Still trying to figure out where it should go, so it won't get in the way of some other component...

Cheesh...you would think with a 10' x 14' fish room, there would be plenty of space... but I'm running out! ;)

What a tough problem to have... :)

Hi George,

Stinks about the Acans. Did the Turbo survive?

I think you were considering setting the frag tank in front of the rubbermaid sump as an option. I was trying to picture in my mind and was wondering if that would cramp things if you had to work on the skimmer or water change system or even the AC unit in the future.

Have you considered under the window, and try to squeeze plumbing behind the water change system to the sump? It might mean building the stand a little higher than normal to get the flow you want down to the sump.

Of course the turbo survived to continue his quest to munch algae off the live rock.

Next to the window = potential algae. I don't want to put anything over there. That's reserved for our treadmill and storage cabinets. (hint hint) :D In fact, I placed a large piece of tag board in the window to keep light off the water storage tanks.

I am leaning toward putting the tank next to the Rubbermaid, opposite from the end where the skimmer is located, but leaving space so I can get to the water tanks easily.

The frag tank stand would be roughly located near the 5G jug shown on the floor in the above picture.

Quick question regarding your ORP probe. How did you calibrate the probe?
\

Instructions with the probe indicate it does not need to be calibrated, as that is done at the factory and it shipped with protective solution on the tip.

They suggest that it be calibrated perhaps once a year or if unusual readings are noted. They sell the calibration solution.

I am sure that Chris can help you out with your problem of running out of room in the fish room. 20' X 20' LOL, I feel another split for this tank build coming.

You really have been following the thread, if you know the contractor's name...

No more room expansions... I'll have to build "up" rather than out... ;)

I'll have the bottom of the frag tank slightly higher than the top edge of the Rubbermaid sump (approx 42"), so the frag tank can drain into the sump. That should put the tank at a perfect viewing height for checking on frags...

Going to get 2x4's to build the stand later this morning...

The darn thing holds water -

Does anyone know what Glass Cages recommends under their tanks? Should I use a layer of foam between the tank and the plywood stand?

And also, the black acrylic overflow cover was not attached to the tank. Should this be siliconed in place? Or just placed there so it can be removed and cleaned?

Stand up, stand up...

Stand up, stand up...

OK so it wasn't rocket science to build a stand for a 24 x 24 frag tank, but I did need to build it high enough to allow good overflow into the Rubbermaid sump.

Here's what I threw together this afternoon:

Lots of lateral support from the plywood side panels...

The 3/4" plywood with cutout for the overflow and return pipes:

The tank in place:

This weekend I'll rig up the overflow pumbing, a DIY durso standpipe and dual returns with locline.

That really is a nice looking frag tank, glad you got it to hold water. You really need to go the the DIY topic and post the pic of your stand in the Show me your fancy Stands thread, lol. Just messing with you, but it is a nice looking frag tank, I see why you bought it.

It looks good. Glad it can hold 2" of water. ;)

You can silicone the black acrylic if you like. Or just set it in place, removing it if desired. I'd put a sheet of foam under it personally.

That's what I was thinking, too. :)

I think I have some of that pretty pink HD sheet foam crap around here somewhere...

Actually I bought it because it was inexpensive - the original owner made me a great deal...he even suggested I re-caulk it before I put water in... I'm guessing he feels the same way about GC. :D

LL what a great build thread! I am still trying to catch up on the reading of this monster thread. Love all the awesome equipment you have chosen. Bye the way when did the apex controller come out and does this mean that my rk elite is already old news that figures?

The RKE is a fine controller - quite a few of the OKC reefers use it. I just chose the Apex because of its networking and iPhone capabilities that are included in the basic package. I pre-ordered the Apex on June 1 and it was delivered first week of August. Worth the wait, IMO.

Thanks for reading the thread - hopefully lots of pictures make it move along quickly. I tried to add a little humor along the way... :p

Come back often.
