Lightsluvr's 340G Upgrade

Lightsluvr - I love your tank. I'm hoping to start up a ~175gallon (50" x 32" x 25") A.G.E. reef tank sometime after the first of the year. Eventually (after the tank is established) I would like to have a 6-line and a mandarin dragonette in the tank... two of my favorite fish. I plan to have a 30-40 gallon refugium primarily for the purpose of pods. Still, I have concerns if a 6-line will wipe out the pod population and not leave enough for the mandarin. I have also read that six-lines can be aggressive towards mandarins. I was about to resign to that idea until I saw that you had one of each of these in your 125 gallon. How long did you have a 6-line and a mandarin in that tank? Did you "target feed" your mandarin or was he able to live off of your pod population?

I'm just trying to get an idea. I know I can't bank on the idea that a mandarin will eat prepared foods. While I would certainly try to feed a mandarin daily with a "mandarin diner" I want a system in which a mandarin can still thrive in case it refuses prepared foods. I guess I'm hoping to hear that your mandarin was in the 125 gallon tank for at least a year, with a full belly, and showed some signs of growth during that period on a pod only diet. Is that asking too much:lol:I figure if they were doing well in your 125 they should do well in my 175 (probably more like 240 gallon with refugium and sump) staocked full of LR.

I'm sure you'll have plenty of pods for a mandarin pair + 6-line in your new tank. :eek1:
I'll take a stab at this one as I too kept a six line and a mandarin in my 150, I never did any target feeding and only used a 30g sump with a few pod rubble piles in the tank and sump. I seeded the tank twice and never had problem with having sufficeint pods in the tank. I lost the mandarin to a rogue crab but the sixline is still zipping all over the place. The siz line how ever goes after food everytime I feed the other fish, he's not picky.

That's encouraging! How long did you have both of them in the tank at the same time?

I agree with what okr33fer said. I have never seen any of my wrasses take an interest in the mandarins in my tank... (I have a male and a female).

I feed my tank aggressively, so there is an abundance of food for the wrasses. I put them in there specifically to predate on nasties like unwanted nudis and other critters...

Thanks for visiting and come back often!

George, your tread is always informative. I'm very interested your test kit experiences and how you come out on it. I appreciate your frequent updates and wanted to keep the test kit issue on the radar. I've visited your web cam several times, cool gadget. BTW that Valmingi is awesome.

Thanks Dan! I'll let you know about the test kits. I am going to try a fresh API DKH kit and see how it works out. I am satisfied with ELOS and Salifert for MG and CA - they always seem to come out close to each other... but as I mentioned, the ALK kits are all over the board. And don't get me started on ELOS putting the wrong instructions in their ALK kits last year and never issuing a recall. :smokin:

Oh, also. Did you ever see your six-line eat any of those bristle worms in the old tank?

No.

He was too small or the worms were too big... or both! ;)

The mandarin was thriving in a 95G tank with LOTS of LR. It did well in the 125G with pod supplements every few months. The other mandarin was always fat and sassy in the 180G. I did not target feed in the other tanks, though I am trying it in the current tank. Whenever I see the Mandarins out and about, I get a turkey baster and some Nutramar OVA and give them a little "squirt".... so far I'm not seeing much reaction to the OVA shower in their vicinity.

They both just keep pecking the rock hunting for live pods...

We'll see.

Good to see you've got the CA reactor going!

We will be looking at getting a pair of Mandarins ourselves, they have so much character and add great color to the tanks. You're lucky if you get them to eat prepared foods, I know people who have.

I love Mandarins, I will give it few more months and add some myself. How do you target feed them in large tank? between all the other fish and so many places for them to hid etc

It was very interesting that Jeff took time to post on your thread. I purchased one of his LF1-300 sumps with a VS3-36 skimmer. I emailed him quite a bit before I ordered and he always replied within 24 hours (often much sooner). One day the phone rang and it was Jeff to discuss any issues or questions I might have. Great guy to work with and he makes great stuff. His skimmer really is plug-n-play.

Well, I don't exactly have it going yet... I did receive the pH probe which was the last piece of the puzzle... After my water change today, I will be doing my water tests to verify that ALK, CA and MG are at optimum numbers. When that is achieved, I will put the CA reactor online to maintain those numbers. I am thinking my MG number is still to be on the low side.

I have been trying to tempt my mandarins to eat OVA, but so far I'm not sure if they're "taking the bait". Hopefully I have enough pods to keep them and the six-line wrasse happy.

I was very impressed with Jeff, and I really like his CA reactor design and construction. As indicated by the previous post, I am waiting for my numbers to be "just right" before starting it up.

I sent him a link to the thread here, and he just wanted to correct some misconceptions about his product. He doesn't come on the threads often, because all the wrong information he reads "gives him a headache..." :D

I can understand his frustration. Ignorance is bliss (I'm blissful all the time), but you can't fix stupid. ;)

Has you tried using a "Mandarin Diner" as described on Melev's site? I have read that roe (fish eggs) work really well when everything else failed to entice mandarins. You can get those at asians markets. They use them on sushi.... they look like little orange balls. Also, heard similar results from black worms.

I don't know about Mandarins, however with Discus-- which can be very finicky freshwater eaters, black worms are one of the foods of choice to get them to eat.

Tank Cam back in operation

Tank Cam back in operation

I have upgraded the tank web cam and have tested it. Please give it a try and verify it is working for you.

The URL is: http://lightsluvraq.viewnetcam.com:50001/CgiStart?page=Single&Language=0

The username is: Aquarist (with a capital A)

the password is: watchfish

If you are asked to download an Active-X control, this is the device that lets you tilt, zoom and pan on the picture. Click yes or accept.

When the blue start page appears, click first on "single" tab which should take you to the new camera which shows the front of the tank. Click on 640x480 resolution to get a larger image. All features except "listen" are functional.

If you click on "Multi" tab, you should see smaller images from both cameras, including the old equipment room camera. You should still be able to tilt, pan and zoom by dragging the cursor and using the mouse roller on the smaller images in the Multi mode.

Please let me know if you have any problems.

George, GEORGE, IF YOU ARE WATCHING TV,..... LOOK OUT, THERE IS A WHALE IN YOUR SALT WATER TANK.... YOU COULD BE IN PERIL !!!!

I can get either web cam to come up easily;

The front (tank cam) is not fluid like the fish room cam;

I could not get the fish room cam to come up with the tank cam under the multi button. The label is there, but no pic.

Not complaining, just responding to your post.

Both give the same result for me.....

still cant see both cams on same page....

maybe it's my computer.

Tank looks great, with lights and moonlights. What an opportunity, to get to sit and watch.

Hmmmm.... the second link takes you directly to the multi image start page. I don't know why you're only seeing one camera... maybe some other folks will chime in. If others are having the same problem, I'll call Panasonic CS for a solution.
