Local gig score today

I'm pretty excited as I found this gig in a local shop today for $30. It's brown with some green in the tips so I'm hoping it will color up in time. It's mouth was pretty tight and he'd had it for a week. I just realized I am out of Cipro and went to eBay where I used to buy it and can no longer find it. Where are people buying Cipro for a decent price these days?

Long tentacles for a carpet and spots down the base. Looks like other gigs I've had.

I'll look again shortly. Could be a mertensii which would be really awesome. I didn't look at the spots all that much.

I think you could be on to something. The tentacles look awfully even for a gigantea.

What color are the spots/verrucae?

+1 i got burnt a couple months ago, and picked up a helianthus :-p i've had multiple gigs as well. i knew it wasn't a haddoni and the spots / verrucae were not the same color as the foot. when i got it outside in the sunlight i saw that the spots were tan and the tentacles had slightly different colored tips... i knew then i had been burnt...

i've seen a bunch of helianthus at local petcos labeled as gigs lately... they usually have a bunch of dead clowns in the tank as well. lol sad but true....

I'll have some time to check it out today. I know at the store the tentacles were longer, skinnier, and flowing with different sizes so I really thought it was a gig.

Here's a couple more pics. My Red Sea clown has taken an immediate interest in it.

From my reading it sounds bad like helianthus have spots going all the way down the column. On this guy the spots stop before reach the foot area. I don't know, could be either still I guess.

I turned the blues off and can confirm for sure that the dots are purple. Very hard to see from the pic because it's already attached itself to a rock nearby so I can move it anymore but I get a purple glimmer from the spots in direct light.

The easiest tell for a gigantea is the movement of its tentacles. You see it best when the flow is off.
It is like the tentacles are waving around, each on its own.
No other anemone I know does this.

So the gig started deflating off and on and then deflated and stayed that way for about 6-8 hours. I moved it to a QT and ordered some Cipro. Still waiting on it so I started erythromycin 2 days ago because I can get it from petsmart easily. It has shown some improvement since starting it and although the mouth is still gaping, it is no longer deflating like it was. As soon as the Cipro arrives I will be starting it.

Remove the dead zoox (brown stuff that looks like rat poop) as soon as you see it.

Having the gig inside the cup isn't ideal because the dead zoox and other pollutants can get caught underneath the nem. Use a turkey baster to make sure the immediate area is clean. The best position is to have the cup upside down and then nem on top. However, since it appears to have fully attached, I wouldn't attempt to move it and cause undo stress.
