Looking for base rock.

I just bought a 90 gallon tank w/basically exerything. I am looking for somewhere to buy at least 80 pounds of base rock. I heard that you could get it cheaper and then seed it with live rock.

Thanks,

Jerry

You could check in the vendor experiences forum for some reviews. A lot of vendors sell live rock, and many of them will sell a "base" rock as well.

I agree with the both last posts. Reeferrocks is a good place to go if you want a certain type of rock. Like if you want a big shelf rock, tell them and they will pick one out for you and actually send ya a pic of it. Then you can decide if you want it or another one. Hirocks is your basic big boulder rocks that can be used for your basic aquascaping. I personally believe that reeferrocks has a better selection but that is only my opinion.

I agree with reeferrocks. I bought 60 lbs, actually weighed about 66lbs. Great to deal with and the rock looks great. I then seeded this with some live rock I purchased from LFS, so far so good.

What was your ratios of Base to Live - if you don't mind me asking? I too have purchased base rock from Hirocks and I'm ordering the live rock this weekend. I have a 120 lbs of base - how much "live" do you think would get me going real good? I really don't want to have to wait a month before I start purchasing "critters".

Thanks for your help,

You might also look in the selling forums and find a reef club in your area by looking in the Reef Club Forums. You can sometimes find good deals locally from someone breaking down their tank.

Most base rock is usually fairly dense, unlike a piece of quality live rock.
This means the more base rock you use, the more of it (and/or live rock) you will need to get the same capacity for biological filtration.
Also, as mentioned in another post, a quality piece of live rock at the higher price, will many times be similar or close to the price of buying the cheaper heavier rock because you are multiplying the price times more pounds than a similar sized quality rock.

most base rock isnt dense. Hirocks is highly dense. Reeferrocks is vry very porous usually, plus you can tell them what you want.

As long as your LR is nice your ratio wont have to be high.

The rock I got from Hirocks is about half and half - dense to porous. I've got some real nice skeletal porous pieces.

One question on the same subject though: Does anybody have an opinion on where to place which rock? Live rock on bottom / Live rock on the top / or should it be mixed up real good?

Also - my "live rock" is coming in today at 5:00pm CST , How much water would I need to remove to place another 100 lbs of rock in the aquarium? Does anybody have a good guess?

Thanks for your help, I hope I'm not "hijacking this thread"!!:rolleye1:

When I decided to do a SW aquarium, my first instinct (as always) is to get everything together and do it as quickly as possible. Well, I made a commitment that I was going to take it real slow with this project, not just because of the expense, but because of the sense of accomplishment one can get from doing things like this.
I would say, with the 66 lbs of live rock, I went to the LFS and purchased about 8 lbs of live rock, let the ammonia spike and come back down. This only took less than a week do to very little die off. I then went back and purchased 5-10 more. I have had the tank up and running since Nov, 2005 and right now I have 2 Ocellaris clowns, 3 hermits, 5 nassarius snails and 5 turbos. I recently added a frag of zoa's. So far, everything is healthy and happy. In the next coming weeks I plan on adding some more items, I'm just not sure which ones. I 'm leaning towards a Yellow Watchman Goby and a Pistol to go along with him. I'm new to this myself, but with the great help here and taking it SLOW I have had a real enjoyable experience. Hope I answered your question in my rambling somewhere.:D

I placed my Live Rock ON TOP of my base rock. I'm not sure you have to do it this way, but the LR was a lot nicer to look at. My water level was at about 2/3 of the way full when I started adding rock. I had a extra resoviour of SW standing by and a siphon to take extra water off if the water level became to high with the addition of the rock. Hopefully you can post some pics, if not let us know how it goes anyway!!! Good Luck.

My hirocks experience was a mix of dense and porous, too. Put 60 lbs under roughly 70 lbs of live rock -- didn't want to kill off the coraline and other stuff on the live (I added the hirocks 6 months after the tank was up). Put it in in December -- it's starting to look pretty good, now. A few more months, and I don't think you'll be able to tell it apart from the live rock.
