Looking for large freshwater fish anyone have any ideas ?

Freshwater rays and snakeheads are not legal in AZ. Many other big tropical fish as well.

I can't say that I like the Govt restricting fish, but where the Snakehead is concerned, it makes sense. People let them go in freshwater lakes and they wipe out everything. Very few natural predators, if any at all in lakes in the US. I don't feel like anyone here would do something as irresponsible as releasing anything into their local waters.

There used to be a freshwater store in a neighborhood here in PHX called Phoenix Tropical Fish Inc. not sure if they are still around, but you might try looking them up. I know they used to have a tank with a huge arowana in it...also try Jesse's Aquarium in central phoenix...they could probably order something for you?

I knew snakeheads weren't but I didn't know rays. Pets Inc used to sell the FW rays.

Perhaps it's because they weren't "of the family Potamotrygonidae"?

Mbu is an awesome puffer...awesome and can be kept with pleco.

I imagine keeping South American fish in AZ could be difficult with the High PH and hard water we have. When I lived in Seattle it was very easy with the moderately acidic and soft water coming out of the faucet

One of my fav freshwater fish was a Snakehead I kept for about 5 yrs

I think it still exists. It's in a residential area, on I think 38th street just north of Thomas...it's been around for ever, changed owners a few times. I used to go there with my dad for pond stuff when I was a kid, 25-30 years ago. My uncle's wife got a gigantic Oscar from them a few years back. Their dry goods area is like a time machine- want a brand new in box filter that fluval hasn't made in 15 years? They got it.

I'd eat it if it got big enough nom nom nom nommy before letting it loose anywhere :wildone:

I like the puffer but they are pricey and all the figure 8's I used to keep used to hang mid to low water in the tank I don't thing Augustus will like company to much.

I kept a red snake head for 3 years until it managed to break the lid on the tank and jump out while I was at school came home he was dried out but still alive but he didn't make it over night they are tough dam fish. mine was about 22 inches stunning fish to watch hunt.

Rainbow snakehead (Channa bleheri) would be the one I want to keep now
