Lost my female

Well my female reidi died last night, not sure why but she had been losing weight over the past couple months even though she was still eating. My guess is a parasite of some sort. My question is now, wut do i do about my male. Can i get him a new mate and expect him to get along with her. And if so should i get a juvenile or one thats the same size as him. They were both captive bred reidis from ORA so my plan is to get another ORA female for him. I would just leave him alone, but since they r such social animals i think it would be detrimental to him to leave him without a female. Anyone input or experience to share??

Any chance that you observed your females poop? If it was white and stringy it was most likely internal parasites. Before you get any more seahorses, I would monitor your male and see if he is eating and pooping normal (purple if he is eating frozen mysis)...

I didnt notice if her her poop was stringy or white, but i dont actually c them going that often. The male is eating fine and i know that his poop is ok because i actually just saw him going yesterday. Its weird because i've had them for almost 2 years now and they r the only to animals in the tank so its strange that she just all of a sudden started going down hill. They both ate like pigs and neither is or was picky they'll eat just about anything, i feed frozen PE mysis as a staple and they also eat frozen hikari plankton. I'll wait a little to observe him before i get another though. Any recommendations on getting a juvi or adult to put with him? He's about 2 years old

I would go with seahorsesource.com.... but I would make sure that his poop looks ok before I put another horse in with him....

getting the new one isnt a problem, my lfs is great and they can get me an ORA reidi in less than a week. i just wasnt sure if i should put a juvenile or adult in with him, since he is already mature.

Once you can be sure the male is going to be OK, and don't rush it, I would go with the ORA again to avoid mixing seahorses from different sources.
It would be nicer to have a female close to the age of the male, but that doesn't mean she will be just as large though as my females are smaller than my males.
However a juvey will work out in time.

yea she defiantly internal parasites. sometime you can get it from feeding live brine or even sometime but its rare from frozen food. next time you see them eating but getting skinny soak the food in prazipro for about 5 minutes before feeding. i had the same thing happen to my erectus. adding a another shouldn't be a problem and i would try to get one about the same size.
