Lucas's 20g nano

With me being away from my tank I guess I can post about some news. My mom texted me tonight and told me she couldn't find my clownfish pair. I'm on vacation so she has been keeping me extremely updated. And FINALLY after a month and a half I think. My clownfish were hosting in my green bubble tip anenome. They have never done this before so she wasn't looking in the anemone and sure enough there they were.

I will be back with my tank on Sunday, I'll post some pics off my new AI prime and hopefully get a picture of my clownfish hosting my anenome!

Lighting help

I finally got home from vacation today and finally got to see my new AI prime up and running. I have to say the first time I walked into the room, it looked amazing! but... After a closer look as I feared the 18x18 spread might not be enough for my tank.:headwally:
As I am sure it is going to be fine at the moment, but down the road, am I going to have to buy another light? I want to be able to fill the sides in with coral and at the moment my mushrooms aren't even opening up because it is shadowing on the sides. I am thinking about purchasing the Radion xr30 gen 2 or 3.I know this light will blow my needs out of the park but it will be nice to carry to my next tank in the future. If I act quick I can probably sell my prime for the same price I bought it for off ebay. Please give opinions and thoughts on the situation.

I'd sooner just throw on 2xT5s. It'll fill in the lighting gap in the tank, plus I think it's beneficial to run them side-by-side with LEDs. And they'll be a lot cheaper than upgrading to the XR30s.

+1 about T5's they will fill in the blank areas for sure and the coral growth will be hands down out of control. I'm thinking about T5 supplement my self. The problem is this tank is so small I would have to ditch the XR15.

Starting my research on T5's I really know nothing about them. Thanks for the help reefwreak and ken. Also I am part of a club in canton Ohio area. Someone is selling a vortech mp40 for at an extremely good price. Would this be too much flow for my tank? Any input would me appreciated

I imagine an Mp40 would be a LOT for your size tank. I almost bought them instead of MP10s because I wanted to be able to take them to my next tank. I didn't, because seeing how much room the MP10s already take up in a small tank, the MP40s would have been HUGE. with HUGE flow as well. So between the room and flow issues, I decided to stick with a used MP10 for $100 off ebay.

Thanks for the reply. I finally got involved with a salt water club and they are selling used stuff out the butt for cheap. Thankfully this morning someone posted a listing for a mp10 wQD for $100 and its mine! extremely excited for this purchase

Nice. Test it for squeaky bearings though. Mine had squeaky bearings when I got it. I also didn't know that it needed a shim between the pump and the glass, and (possibly/probably) it led to the bearings squeaking worse, and eventually burning up and seizing entirely.

If you are using this on thin glass make sure you have a shim. The person who had the pump before you may have had it on a thick glass tank, and as a result may have tossed out the shims, leading you to assume there are no shims. BUT THERE ARE AND YOU NEED TO USE THEM ON THIN GLASS.

I just texted the seller and said he has two shims, how do i test it for squeaky bearings? probably a dumb question but in don't want I buy a bad mp10. His tank cracked and made him Sell everything so at least I know now hes not selling it because its bad

You can probably test it with a piece of cardboard (or just the shims) in between. You just want to make sure you don't have the outside motor assembly up against the wet-side assembly while they're running. The two sides being too close to each other will cause excess friction, noise, heat, and eventually failure.

If he has two shims, just stack the two shims between the pump "dry side" and the propeller side "wet side", and run the pump like that, and you'll see if it makes noise or not. You'll know right away if it is super squeaky or not. If it is super squeaky, you can fix it, but it's a big DIY project.

It will be fine, if doesn't work well take it to LFS. If you have a good LFS they will tell you what you need for it. I'm finding with the upgraded return pump I do not need a power head as all my SPS polyps are fully extended and I'm seeing a good amount of growth. I'm still testing with out the power head if anything changes I will keep you posted. Btw keep that mp10 on low they are powerful and the Nuvo has a thin glass. Last thing you want to do is come home to a empty tank and a flood.

So sadly someone in the salt water club I am in, had his tank crack. It was the jbj45 I believe. I was able to pick and choose from his dry goods! He wasn't setting up another tank so he was selling stuff for dirt cheap. His tank just cracked this morning!

I was able to pick up a lot of good salt water supplies, here's the list
A vortech mp10wQD.
GFO
150 watts heater
Some tubing
Food and supplements
He also had a pink tipped torch coral.

This is going to be a beginner question so excuse me if this sounds dumb!
So the seller told me it was a pink tipped torch coral, I put it in my tank last night and it was open this morning but the color was not pink and I know corals look different under dIfferent lights. The torch coral is like white tips and white arms. So here's the dumb question. I know blue hammers are rare in the hobby because of color is an all white torch rare as well based off color? Or maybe not rare but more exotic? Or is it just me being dumb. Any input/opinion is appreciated.
