Macro Algae

Hi Reefers,

Just bought a batch of Dragon's Breath Macro Algae,

I have zero experience with these things.

4 bulb t5 fixture, enough for my rose bta so i think im good on the lights.

But i would love to put this in my DT, i have a dedicated spot for it. How abouts... do i go doing that? Do i glue it? hahaha

AGAIN. ZERO CLUE.

I recently added some red gracilaria to my sump and used a rubber band to attach it. Once it took hold of the rock rubble I was able to remove the rubber band. I think the Dragon's Breath has the same sort of attachment mechanism.

Best keep it out of the dt: from the dt it can get into places like overflows and pump, and if it roots, you might as well toss your live rock.

no dragons breath is not the same as gracilaria. it tends to just break off where you glue it and will release and float around. dragons breath isn't one of the macros that root themselves to the rocks. I keep my dragons breath in the sump.

for caulerpa type macro this is great advice but there are many types of macro that are relatively safe in the DT and even though the dragons breath wont really attach it is still a safe macro from the DT.

dragons breath is a great display macro..
Simply superglue it to a rock (yes... just regular superglue) and you are good to go..
It doesn't break apart or spread or anything..

and yes the lights should be fine..
dragons breath should be nice and red with "orangeish" tips/new growth..

Its one of my favorites for sure..

I don't have enough experience with macro algae to give you any useful tips but I would post this in the Marine Plants & Macroalgae forum as well. There are a number of helpful folks over there that would be a great resource!

Good luck! Dragons Breath is such a cool looking alga.

And I just learned this trick from that forum since I've started a display refugium for macro algae.

Put some super glue on the end of the algae where you want to attach it and let it dry. Then do a 2nd application and hold it to the rock you want to attach it to and it will stick much better.

thank you for all the responses. i learn a little more about the hobby everytime i come here.

i will definitely try and find a nice place for it. i just purchased some basic breeder boxes so i can hold them in place in my tank for now.
