Majestic Angel Experience

I've been looking at getting a majestic angel since I upgraded. I've read all the information I can find. My only conclusion is everything I've read contradicts every thing else. What is everyone's experience with them. How touchy are they and to get feeding. I'm most likely to get an adult around 3"-4" from Live Aquaria preferably from the Divers Den and from any locale besides the Indo Pacific. I figure this gives me the best chance to get a good specimen and have a good guarantee.

The first one I had (3"-4") wouldn't eat and passed away. He was also harrased by my 3-1/2" Yellow Tang.

I saw another one a few months later at a LFS and he was eating pellets. My new one is larger, 4"-5" and doing great so far for 3 months!

Mine doesn't pick on SPS or Zoas, but a small occasional nip on Clam and Frogspawn.

I would get one with a live guarrantee unless if you personally see him eating pellets.

I've had one for about a year now with a pair a regal angels and a joculator angle. I would say they are pretty bullet proof if you get a healthy one to begin with. I found mine easier to get to eat then the regals. However they do need some special attention during the initial two weeks. He does not bother with any of my SPS. Mine to was subjected to significiant harassment from my yellow tang for about 4 days. They now ignore each other.

My tangs didn't bother my Majestic at all. But, I trick them for a few days before I add a fish. I take a life-size color print of the new fish and cut it out and tape it to the side of the tank. By the time the new fish is actually introduced, the current residents are already "used" to it.

I added one a couple weeks ago and as soon as i put it in my powder blue tang kicked the !@#$ out of it...for a full day straight. Then literally over night everthing was fine. I have heard the same horror stories about them not eating and eventually dying...i think i got lucky and got a heathy one. He eats everything I throw in the tank and then some.

btw, eskymick...great idea! not sure why i didn't think of that! I tried the mirror "trick" and that didn't work too well....at least not to the PBT. The mirror did keep my purple tang occupied though :)

I have a Majestic for a year he is 3 inches and when first introduce it in the tank It was beaten badly also by my Powderblue Tang for a week straight. The PBT would pin the Majestic in a corner of the tank or in a crevice on the LR and let the Majestic have it every time it saw the poor fish. The fins were all torn up and I was afraid it was going get stress out and die. After a week the PBT showed who was the Boss and left the Majestic alone. Now the don't even notice each other. Now the Hippo Tang chases the Majestic once in awhile, but with no harm to the Majestic. The Majestic eats everything I throw in the tank, just like my Tangs! Beautiful addition to any large tank. Mine eats all my candy canes but leaves everything else alone in my mix reef!

He is a picture of my majestic.

Angelfish definitely have personalities and it is hit or miss with getting them to get along. I have a large queen, blue face and blue ring together with a small magestic and singapore. They all get along great but it took some time and trading fish to get that harmony. They are also with a huma trigger, a blonde naso and a yellow tang. Unless the fighting is severe, give the fish a few days to calm down. It usually will, but not always.

i have had my magestic for about one year now and it seems to be a slow growing fish. Just something to keep in mind. I bought it at about 2" and I dont think it is even 3" yet. Otherwise a good healthy fish.

I just picked up a small adult majestic yesterday, what a beautiful fish. So far all of my other fish have pretty much ignored him and he is picking at the live rock. He is still pretty shy but this seems to be common with this species.

Hey Matt, I haven't taken a pic of the tank in a while but I'll try to get one soon. I'm actually trying to stay away from the tank for a few days until the majestic settles in, he's really spooky right now and I scared him pretty bad a few times yesterday so I figured I would leave him be for now.

I'm battling some problem algae right now so the tank is looking a little nasty but the water parameters are spot on so I'm not sweating it just yet. I cut back a bit on my lighting and made a big batch of RO water for a change along with a dose of phosphate remover so I think I'll get it under control soon.

The majestic has settled in very nicely. He's still a bit shy but is swimming around the tank now and is feeding very nicely on just about everything I put in the tank including new life pellets. He even chased the resident tank bully, my chocolate tang, out of his favorite spot today. Without a doubt the most beautiful fish I have ever owned.

I have had three and the first one that I had would not eat anything. The second one I had for three years and it ate well and was very hardy until it got poisoned with a contaminant. The third one that I currently have came from the Diver's Den and is hardy and a good eater. I would get one form the Den, or if not there do not buy any angelfish locally without seeing it eat first at the store. If it doesn't eat do not buy it until you see that it is eating even if you have to go back to the store a couple of times. Large angelfish are a crap shoot with some of them being so set in their ways in the wild only eating sponges or whatever that they starve to death in captivity as they do not recognize what we give them as food even when other fish are eating in front of them. Once you get one that is eating then they are usually no problem. Lesley

I've had my majestic over a year in my 120 FOWLR. It has grown steadily and is gaining it's adult coloration nicely. Eats anything and everything. It was shy initially but is now quite social and even pushy with my butterfly and tang. Hard fish to beat in terms of rich color (with exception of the regal) IMO. My experience with angels is to look for a specimen in the 3-5 inch range. They seem to adapt more readily to captive life and captive foods. Large fish are often difficult to get eating. A good amount of LR for shelter and grazing is a must IMO.
