the SMS module will have 3 RS232 ports:
- one to the ProfiLux
- two for connection to PC, View or in this case the AI lamp

-> YES

Champion :D

This is really cool - do you know if there is any thoughts on adding on Solaris I-series support as well??

After discussion with Chris at Ai we are now pleased to announce the Ai lighting system will be made available to all our retailers as sales item, so if you have a ProfiLux and wish to purchase or get info on one of these lighting systems please contact Chris at Ai and he can let you know which retailers can assist.

The same goes if you are interested in the lighting unit and want more information on what the ProfiLux can do to bring this system to full life, we can provide you with all info.

Furthermore the ProfiLux is now "officially" the recommended controller for the Ai lighting system.

I will be having 3 sets on my new system once I get the basement ceiling reinforced for the new tank!

I love the fact that the Profilux can control this and commend both companies on working together on this.

I was set to order on Monday, but when I saw FishieNuts picture of the new modular design I had to stop. The wife and I like the way the LEDs light up a tank, but when we saw it was now modular instead of a clean singular fixture, we had to rethink it.

Has anyone seen any other pictures of this new unit other than Fishies?

I understand the modularity of the units but IMHO a singular unit just looks cleaner to me and the wife.

The new one is nice, but not quite what I had been hoping for. :(

I still want one of these.. and a cooler and an SMS module... but the wife thinks these look a bit industrial/cobbled together.

We'll see.

They do make these to order from memory so maybe they can still make one the old way for you. I would shoot chris an email about it.

Already have, no dice. :(

He has been fantastic about answering every question imaginable so far for me in a very timeful manner.

Hi elzol -

In addition to our email correspondence, I'll point out a few of the main points for this design change.
  • Modularity - The individual lighting elements allow the user to move the light where want it. No longer are you limited to simply placing the light across the length of the tank and reefscaping around the light. This issue is suffered by traditional T5, metal halide fixtures, etc.
  • Upgradeability - The first point, modularity, lends to ease in future upgrades. Whether it be to upgrade the LEDs themselves or to change tank sizes, you aren't loosing out on your existing investment. Simply order the longer length set of rails and the additional units you'd like, and plug them in - that's it!
  • Service/Support - In the unlikely event that there is a problem with the fixture, only one unit would be down at a time rather than the whole fixture. Diagnosing faults is also much quicker as units are individual.
  • Light Output - The driving force for this change was to deal with the inherent lack of output spread that is suffered by the traditional singular/long fixture design. The LED arrays output in a trapezoidal fashion. When the arrays go the length of the tank, the width of the tank (front to back) can appear to be dim on wider tanks.

This individual approach provides multiple output areas and much more effectively covers the width of the tank.

Keep in mind, that the actual light output hasn't changed, but the effectiveness in its coverage has increased significantly.

The change does indeed look different than our previous design, and traditional designs. This change was driven by customer feedback and months of testing realize the numerous advantages.

I can also assure you nothing is cobbled together; these systems go through the same rigorous QC and testing that all other units have in the past.

Also - we've had a few emails regarding the controller aspect of our fixture. The standard fixture package includes a controller that provides intensity control, sunrise/sunset, moonlight, etc.

For those that want even more control of the lighting (position based lunar cycles, cloud cover, thunderstorms, and so much more) and full tank control we recommend the ProfiLux as it works wonderfully with our fixture and is a fantastic product.

Best regards,
-Chris Clough

Thanks for all of the details Chris!

*I* understand the benefits of the modularity and it makes complete sense. I think my wife understands the benefits as well, but isn't quite on board with the new look. :/

Just to clarify, no disrespect was meant by the 'cobbled together' comment, that's just how she expressed it to me. :)

I understand the advantages of light distribution and adjustability, but I would order the rails to be flush with the fixtures, perhaps in anodized black aluminum(?), and somehow cover up the Aqua Illumination logo so I am not glancing at it a zillion times a day.

Is it possible to purchase the light without the included controller so safe on the purchase cost for those who already have a profilux? as the controller would just be sitting on a shelf collecting dust.

The rails could be anodized black; it'd end up being a customer order though. It could be cut to whatever length you like.

The logo being front and center on each 'could' be removed, or at least small or something. If it's just gray, it'll look a bit odd. What did you have in mind?

We could do that; please contact ReefGeek for more info on pricing.
