Male clown behavior question?

Greetings RC folks,

Trying to figure out a behavior I am seeing with a male A. Latezonatus.

He has recently began cleaning liverock IN EARNEST! The chewing and biting cleaning behavior, that is. I understand that when the female does this it can be a prelude to egg laying, as it was with my A. Frenatus pair, but is the male just doing this for kicks or is something else at play here. The pair has been bonded for some time now alone in a 38 gallon tank. I have witnessed the males' submissive "shakes" behavior to the females aggressive advances for several weeks already as well.

Am I simply looking into this too much? or should I simply allow myself to continue to get excited about the possibilities?

Many thanks

:) Kurt

Interesting.

A little off-topic, but do you mind sharing a picture or two of them? So few people have them.

Here you go. This picture is a bit old. The anemone is now 12 inches across.

Beautiful. :)

males often clean the rock to entice the female to lay eggs.... have your clowns laid eggs before?

These clowns have not laid eggs. I've not heard of males cleaning as an inticement, but it does sound plausible. May I ask where your information came from???

Thanks

:) Kurt

I have always seen the male (( along with the female, but mostly the male )) clean off the spot before spawning. I have seen this with a GSM pair, pink skunk pair, and a Clarkii pair.

Todd - Do you remember this behavior happening prior to a first spawn?

I have seen my Tomatos group clean after a hatch but I guess I never paid much attention prior to their first spawn.

I do with my pink skunks, since they are the most recent spawner's. I remember being drawn to the tank because of the male's actions of cleaning off the spot.
