Mandarin Primer

i have a fat and healthy male in a 100g tank where he has lived for a year with no problems. it seems like i have millions of pods and i do not feel he will ever eat them all. he pretty much stays near the rocks all the time and comes out when i feed but does not show any interest in the food. he does start aggressively picking at the rocks when i feed , i guess the feeding gets the pods active making him hunt.

I just set up a new 350G tank and transferred a male mandarin from our 180G and a female mandarin from our 12G into the new system. I don't have an enormous amount of LR in the DT, but the tank is supported by a 90G sump with Chaeto and an 100G sump with DSB and LR. I shined a flashlight into the sumps last night and they are literally teeming with pods...

I am told that pods can often survive being "pumped", so hopefully the pod population in the DT is constantly being replenished...

The mandarins have crossed each other's paths while feeding - no signs of aggression - just curiosity and swimming about... yesterday mroning when the lights came on, they were on the sand bed enjoying each others' company. Hopefully one morning I will get to record a mating ritual...now where's that darn video camera? ;)

Everyone is welcome to explore our build thread...it is quite detailed with copious photos...

The Seachem eggs were a flop for us. Maybe I just got a bad can?
Not even the PJ Cardinals wanted to eat it. Only the Clowns eat them (and really what would the clowns not eat?)
The size would have been perfect. Too bad!

Thanks for running the experiment...

mandarin on a 30g refugium or display with six line

mandarin on a 30g refugium or display with six line

i really loved this fish so i been holding on to get another one
the tank current is 300 gallon mixed reef with 150 gallon sump and 500 lbs of live rock.i see a lot of pods still even with my six line wrasse and hawkfish in the tank. do you guys thing i can get another one? on the refugium for couple of days to quarantine ( i sure that mandarin does not get ick) to rest

Bad news. I've put so much effort into getting a pair.
I've been working with them for a few weeks to train them to eat frozen. Had live mysids on hand, etc. Within 2 weeks they were eating frozen food and gaining weight.
Now they are really excited to see the frozen food but the larger one has been getting more and more aggressive towards the smaller one.
As it turns out the smaller one is NOT a female. I received two males.
:(
So I am going to have to find a new home for the second male. What a bummer.

I got my male about 2 months ago and he seems to be happy and fat.

Question- I am using a HOB refugium with a ball of chaeto. Will the pods migrate from the HOB to the display since its higher? I see lots of pods in the refugium, but have trouble finding them in the display. I have about 130 lbs of LR in the display.

Question for you all!

I purchased my pair of Mandarin's and had them in my DT for little over a month where they ate copepodes and got FAT! I just had to tare my tank down to rebuild the stand and I felt it was a perfect time to keep them isolated in a smaller QT and try to get them now eating frozen and pellets. I know that my established tank with LARGE refugium can handle the two of them, but i would prefer to be able to feed them prepared foods in the event that it was completely necessary.

I have placed a small glass olive jar in the tank with pellets, and mysis, but they dont go near it from what I can see.

Does anyone have a Step-by-step plan they used to get their dragonets to start eating prepared foods?

I am getting worried because they have been in that tank for about 4 days and havnt really had much to eat.

Bobby,
I have had good luck with selco enriched blood worms.
I also have a link to Matt Pederson's step by step training. Are we allowed to post a link to another forum here or is it against user guides?

if you could PM that would be great! But when it comes to posts for information and knowledge I believe it is ok

Anybody?

I saw my Green mandarin sleeping behind my LTA. Are mandarins immune to anemone stings? Tentacles were touching it but it was between a rock and the anemone. The anenome is buried in the gravel but stretches out over the rock. I have seen it sleeping next to the anemone for several nights.

Everything I read says that anemones can hurt mandarins.

On a different note: I picked up a new female this morning at the Fedex office and so I was late for our morning feeding.
Bruce, my little fatty spotted male was already sitting on 'his' rock waiting for breakfast! So cute. I love these fish. :)

Can they ever get too fat by the way? He's just eating and gaining and since bloodworms are his favorite I am still enriching with Super Selco. Should I lay off the selco a bit?

I have a question, I've had a female Spotted Mandarin fish in my 180 gallon mixed for a while now, I was wondering, can I add a male Spotted Mandarin fish? Or will they fight?
