i know that mantis shrimp break glass
but can pistol shrimp do the same???? they have that big claw..

also i havent had any pest yet but if i did have a mantis in my tank how long would it take for him to start showing up...

There is no contest between a mantis and a pistol shrimp... the pistol loses.... It can't break glass either....

How long have you had the LR in your tank???

i would never put them up against eachothr just an attention grabber... ( people wouldent know by fourm name if i ment shooting it or a pistle shrimp lol) LR IS 4 months old

You would more than likely hear a mantis or would have seen him by now... but I have heard stories that some stay hidden even up to a year??? If you don't hear clicking or see him at night with a red light you probably are not going to have one!!!!

Just as stomatopods differ in size and type of claw, so do snapping shrimp. A few large species (2.5-3 inches) are capable of breaking glass (thin). The disruptive forces generated by the cavitation that they create when striking are considerable and they can direct them forward over a body length.

Matched for body size, many snapping shrimp can more than hold their own against a stomatopod.

You shouldn't worry about getting a pistol shrimp with your gobby... It isn't going to break your glass unless your glass tank is extremely thin.... Been doing this for nearly 15 yrs and never heard of a normal sized!!! pistol shrimp breaking someone's tank glass!!! I suppose it is possible?!?!?!?! But don't think you have to worry!!!

I guess if you are worried don't get one!!! :)

I have had them for years and everyone that I know that has had them haven't had glass broken from them.....
A yellow watchman gobby and pistol are good companions.... Mine play all day!!!!

No they don't target the glass... They snap there claws...click, click.... Sorta sounds like snapping your fingers together... They run around like the shrimp I keep in the tank... Fun to watch with the relationship it has with it's gobby!!!

Traveller7 Very good read...

It is capable of hurting fish but my fish are large enough and stay away from the shrimp...

Again they aren't for everyone but I have never had any real problems with mine in a very active reef environment!!

I certainly didn't mean to imply that all snapping shrimp could break glass. Most can't, cut a few of the very large species that reach 3 + inches can deliver a good crack. I've seen them kill similar sized mantis shrimp and I've had them crack photographic tanks (made from single glazing).

I bet that is right!!! That is a large pistol shrimp... I wouldn't want to get my hands near him!!! :D

At that size I could see them handling most mantis in their size range....
