Marineland Marine series tanks

Sorry RokleM, that was poorly written. What I meant to say was that it is worth the $100.00 extra in the Marineland series. I have seen quotes where starfire or low iron glass adds $ 400.00 or more to the price of a custom tank. Worth $ 100.00 not worth $ 400.00.

I can tell the difference, it just isn't that pronounced.

 I can understand that. I've seen some RIDICULOUS prices for starfire tanks, but that's also partially due to the custom nature. I'm glad to see a manufacture give it now as a simple upgrade option.

I don't know if having starphire glass is going to be a good thing or not. I'll just see all my nuisance algea and aptasia better. :)

I had the same tank 60x36x30 quoted with starfire from AFY and it was 3,000 or 4,000 FOR THE TANK ALONE with shipping extra.

Is there any way to close in the stand back to have the system sit in the center of a room, rather that against a wall?

I would think that it can be done. You could build a panel out of a sheet of plywood and trim it in. Matching the paint would be the hardest part.

I assume th back on them is drillable? See no reason in the world that they would temper 3/4" glass on the back.

Also, does anyone think im crazy to drill this thing myself for the closed loop?

Ive drilled dozens of holes before, but nothing this expensive or thick. Ive done half inch before, tons of times.

I have a place that rents the suction mounted drill presses for drilling tanks...i was thinking about renting it for this job.

What do you guys think?

The back should be able to be drilled. I can say that you may want to do some homework on CL. They really are not that efficent unless you install an ocean motion and then it is still hit or miss. Then you have a bunch of holes in the back of your tank.. If you must, you should be able to roll the tank on its face and drill it. Just make sure you buy a new bit or two.

oh yeah, thats the only way i would try drilling it.

I was planning on a OM 4-way with 4 revolutions all coming over the top.

I only need 1 hole the intake.

I had a thought though.

What if i used the extra return hold in the overflow?

I dont mean as it is, but what if i drilled th overflow and used one of those rubber gaskets they use on skimmers, and extended the intake beyond the overflow. That way im utilizing the existing hole?

the only thing i am concerned about would be, finding a pump that i could draw from a 3/4" hole.

I have to imagine, that isnt going to work.

also, as to have all the mess falling outside of the tank, what if i laid it on its back with a couple 2 x 4's under it, maybe every foot or so, and drilled it from the inside?

This would give me a better edge on the inside, and in the horrible event of a little ship out and the end of the hole, atleast it would be on the outside where i have the ability to do something about it if decided to leak....

the drill press is only maybe 10 pounds, and 14" tall. It suction mounts to the glass its drilling to give a perfect drilling angle.

I love mine. Everything is very high quality, but they are very affordable for a tank that size. I paid $ 2,200 for the 250 tank, canopy and stand. The Stands are well engineered and are made out of WOOD!!! The starfire is only on the front. It is only a $ 100 more, but I would pay much more for starfire than that. Starfire is completely overrated IMHO.

I personally like the low stands. Corals look better from the top.

I emailed Marineland and they told me that Starfire on the front is standard on these tanks. Can you confirm that you paid extra for it? Starfire on the ends is extra (don't know how much though).

That's not correct. Starfire is a "standard" OPTION, but not "standard". They probably misspoke and/or were trying to imply that their starfire package is the most commonly sold currently. You have to specifically order the tank+starfire or else you get normal glass. The same goes for black silicone if you're interested (I did).

From the sheet I saw, there were a bunch of part numbers. For each size tank, it looks like there are:
1) Tank
2) Tank + starfire
3) Tank + black silicone/trim
4) Tank + starfire + black silicone/trim

x 4 tanks (150, 200, 250, 300)

This was the Marineland catalog sheet, not a vendor sheet, FYI. Then again... maybe if they're selling starfire on 9 out of 10 tanks, they might have just dropped option #1.

No, i need to, i just held off because i kept getting the run around from different shops about the tank. They would quote me one price, and then call me later and say the price went up.

this happened 3 times. So I wasnt SURE if i was getting one or not....but now its official. Ill start one real soon.

Juniormc8704 have you started a build thread for your inwall setup?

just another opinion on marineland. i just got a 220g ( not the new deep dimension ) but i have to say the quality for the price on these tanks is fantastic! better than any all glass i have had. just my two cents. i bet the new deep dimension tanks are just as nice as the standard

How thick is the glass on that bad boy? 3/4"? Is it well made? The hard part is never buying the tank. It's buying all the stuff that goes in it and under it! Can wait to watch it come to life.

without the obvious options that miracles can offer, i would say its as good or better in terms of build quality if we are comparing apples to apples.

The silicone work is perfection. 3/4" glass, and beautifully finished edges.

Even the support molding is nice. Also, lets not forget the price is a fraction of a miracles tank.

Although, I would be lying if i said i wouldnt rather have a miracles tank.

That would be crazy for one that size.

On my 200 (4x3'), the glass is about 14mm/1/2". The bottom is about 3/4". The silicone is very well done, and more intense than I've seen on most tanks. Many vendors barely attach the top trim, but much detail has been put into securing the trim on these.

That being said, my first two had to be returned, but the 3rd one is pretty well done.

300 Gallon

300 Gallon

Hi,

I have asked a couple of LFS to get me pricing for the 300 (tank only) with the Starfire front. So far, I haven't heard an answer back. They apparently have to go to the distributor. Does anyone have an idea of the tank only price?

Also, I know Marineland will add custom drilling for a closed loop and relocate the overflow (for a charge). Does anyone know if they would make it with an external overflow?

Thanks!
Mark
