Mark's 150 gallon

Hey Mark, I didn't want to derail Bulent's thread so I'll aske here..
Which mud and how much did you use in your system?
Do you have any pics?
Do you have light over it?
Is it contained in anything?
Have you added/removed any since putting in, originally?
Have you seen it get colonized by anything over the past year?

2 zoos and a green acro!?!?!!??
Not impressed.....

LOL, it was the only acro they had. Just you wait .....

Mark, that is just ridiculous! Well done man!!

Thanks Matt!

That Green Slimer is iconic. It has a unique shape and is instantly identifiable as from Mark's reef. I really hope you don't have to alter it too much.

For some reason it always reminds me of artwork from a Yes album cover.

I can see that. :) Thanks Kev.

The entire reef is looking crazy awesome Mark, just blows me away how obvious the growth on everything is, let alone the colors - very inspiring to me mate

Thanks Andrew ... starting up with the AF Vitality to see if it does anything besides stain my hands.

Your reef really has turned into something special. Absolutely stunning!

I agree 100 %

Thankyou both.

I haven't had a chance to turn off the sump and pumps to take pictures yet. They are shallow rubbermaid or glad containers that I had laying around. They look like containers of crap and I'm not sure it's done anything. I used Walt Smith Fiji mud in the hope that mud from the ocean might add some traces, or bacteria, or industrial sludge missing from the tank during the crash.

I have not moved it since adding and occasionally it gets stirred by me, mostly accidentally, which does a good job clouding the tank. No corals seem to mind. Maybe I'll take a container out and take a pic or two.

KH 6.5 to 6.7 so I upped the dosers to 75ml a day now to try and keep up. Ordered concentrated two part (TLF C-Balance, gallon size) for the first time in over a year.

I've been gone for a long time and just checked up on the thread and all I can say is WOW! sold my 65 last weekend and am down to a 40 breeder. Keep it up man!

Hi Nick, thanks for dropping by. You have a thread for the 40 breeder?

Tank is back to a really good place. I'm not sure if it's been the reduction of PhosphateRx dosing to just 1 drop daily or the addition of AF Vitality but colors, skin thickness and growth are all doing really well.

I have to think the problems with Pinky and one other coral were caused by an overdose of PhosphateRx which put too much crap into the display. I'll call it Lanthanum poisoning due to my careless usage of it. I'm still dosing in the first sump chamber and not catching any of the flocculant but at a single drop I think (guess) there is enough PO4 in the water to precipitate out rapidly before making it back into the display.

Picture dump...

A full dropper squirt of my CaNO3 mixture has kept Nitrates measurable somewhere between 1 and 2. This is enough to kick the Katropora into high gear and the colors are really starting to come out. Even the more shaded areas have intense coloration.

Whatever this is continues to excel in here.

I can't get over how cool the new branch looks.

The Lokani has regained a nice color as well.

Nice thick skin that visibly contracts around the branch when disturbed.

This is the milli frag I put up to replace the old one. I just don't think it's very attractive. Skin has some pink, some orange, some purple, but nothing intense.

Parent down in lower light.

This one continues to improve after suddenly waking up.

Turdmongous has not improved.

This one is really starting to take off and look good. It may be Red Planet, not sure. I had a red planet and another unknown reddish acro. A piece broke off, the tank crashed, the piece survived but I'm not sure what coral it came from.

Palmer's Blue Milli refuses to show much color for me. Way up under a lot of light, 500 PAR, and while growing with good polyp extension ... turd.

Red Robin maybe a touch redder. This is nearing the best I've seen it and will most likely fade since I looked at it.
XeimgPYh.jpg

My boring green frag. I think made a good choice, just need to wait it out. This green has never stayed green for me and usually goes to a nice blueish green.

Another survivor may be waking up.

Oh my god man!!!
This is astonishing!!
The corals look absolutely amazing
Isn't that big yellow thing with the red polyps a pink lemonade?

Those colony pics are sweet Mark.........well done:thumbsup:

Palmers always look kinda turdish when small.......it'll pay off once it gets bigger.

Is it? I will have to look at some pics. Cincinnati stores are horrible for not paying attention to what corals they have so all end up no-named. :D Thanks for the compliments, but let's see if I can hold it here for a while.

your tank is starting to look insane with the pe and growth. everything looks great Mark

Thanks Cody.

That may be the best Red Robin pic that I have ever seen.

Hi Kev, thanks, but I've seen better. Maybe some are photoshopped but I trust the pics from BattleCorals. https://battlecorals.com/products/red-robin

Thanks Ed, glad to hear the Palmer improves with time. It's starting to show some growth again so hopefully I will see some blue this year ... maybe.

Everything g is looking so good Mark! I am so happy for your success...and as always, jealous of your Lokani:p

Thanks Matt!

I've been super busy with my sons HS graduation and moving my mom into a retirement complex but I've been able to keep the tank stable.

First though ... I have been using Poly Filter in both tanks and nothing out of the ordinary showed up so I have removed it. In my 40 a nub stuck out of the water so I decided to do an experiment for the heck of it.

Left side is 4 drops of MicroE (colorless)
Center is 4 drops of ZeoSpur 2 (egads!)
Right is 4 drops of AF Energy (orange)

Yep.

Here's a quick FTS.

Your tank is just chugging right along! It looks great. That's an interesting experiment. I can't remember what the color orange represents with the polypad?

Thanks.

It might just be the color of the food, it is orange in the dropper.

There seems to be conflicting information on colors, with the PolyFilter FAQ not even covering most of them. Rather odd.

Version #1

Blue: Copper
Red: Iron
Green: Free Copper ions
Brown: Normal organic load
Black: Heavy organic load

Version #2

General Maintenance Comments: Poly-Filter turns color when removing medications. Aqua to Dark Blue: Copper or Copper Salts. Orange: Iron. Bright Red: Aluminum. Bright Yellow: Ammonia, Amines or Solvents. Dyes: Color of the solution when added i.e. Methylene Blue: Pale Blue. Malachite Green: Light Green. Tannins/Humic acid: Dark Brown. Organic Wastes: Light Tan progressing to Dark Brown. Poly-Filter extends time between water changes. Add de-chlorinated water to make up for evaporation loss. If pH shifts below acceptable level, change water and add a new Poly-Filter. Heavy slime producing water conditioners can surface coat Poly-Filter and interfere with absorption performance. In Marine water, soak in 3% hydrogen peroxide then rinse well in fresh water. In Freshwater, soak in 10% salt water solution then rinse well in fresh water.

Mark's 150 gallon

Mark I want, no need a frag of that Palmer's when it grows out.....please.

The tank is looking great and I'm very glad you rode things out as it served as inspiration for me when I had a few troubles hit.

Thanks. Not sure I can ever get it to grow, but I'll keep at it. :)

So I had a flow issue that still amazes me. I'm still learning things.

A couple of weeks ago I took this topdown of the setosa and noticed the brown skin with algae growing on it.

OauV9Nph.jpg

A week ago it finally dawned on me what was happening. I have 3 pumps on the left side and while I was worried about directing flow at corals I didn't even think about the flow into the pumps. Apparently due to the narrow width of the tank and the way the rocks were positioned I created a tunnel of very strong flow across the blue stag and past this setosa. Oops. Is this why I have had issues coloring up that stag?

I thought I was losing the blue stag to a bacterial infection but since lowering the flow it's regained hard edges and appears to be recovering. I stripped the skin off it without even realizing what I was doing. Crazy.

rMu8ct2h.jpg

This is a front shot of the setosa but all the brown areas have recovered nicely.
RDrpcrvh.jpg

This may explain why my small frag of the blue stag has good color and health sitting down in the sandbed. Only time will tell and either the stags will regain health and color or this was just a coincidence.

Another FTS shot because I had the camera out. Dosing AF Vitality (vitamins) has given the tank a nice coat of red cyano in places. I like red.

Glad you caught the issue. I think that flow is one of the most misunderstood and misapplied segments of our hobby and I'm saying this from experience.
