Mark, if you need a large QT let me know. I will let you borrow my tank. But you have to pick it up... You will have plenty of room for all the frags..

Thanks Steve for the offer, but at this time, I'm good on space.

Good to hear things went well far you Mark. What are your plans at this point. Are you going to continue to dip and QT since you found so little?

I know you threw some stuff away, I just see it as more space for a better collection.

Either way, you need to hurry up so you and Tim can come over and help me. :D

Thanks Jason. My plans are to continue to dip the corals over the next 5 weeks. I am planning on rescaping the tank just a bit and thin out some of the corals. I want to leave my display acrofree for at least 6 weeks and possibly up to 8 weeks depending on both of the systems health and the corals themselves.

As I am sitting here at work, I have been thinking more and more of how I will feel putting corals back into the tank. I went through yesterday and scraped and chiseled off any bases that were left on the rocks and I also tried to fish out any acro pieces that I saw on the sand bed. Just to make sure, I also took my scraper and turned over the whole sand bed to make sure if I missed any pieces . I want to make sure that I made my best effort in removing any food source for the aefw's.

wow.. I've just been hanging out in the back ground. That is a ton of work. I'm sorry that you had to tear it down that was a nice looking tank.

Do you plan on treating the display tank its self or just allowing the normal life cycle to take place to take care of the worms?

Thanks Froman for joining in. It was a ton of work and that was only week one:eek:

I was debating on pulling the rest of the corals (monties, favias, echinos and palys) and treating that tank and rock, but since there is no known treatment for the eggs, I am leaning on just letting the tank run its natural course.
I have spoken to enough people that have cleared their tanks for a period of time to know that a tank can be rid of these pests after as little as four weeks. I am planning on going as long as I can.
Some of the corals will not make it and I have to be OK with that. Like I've mentioned before, if I wanted stay in this hobby, this is a mandatory crossroad for myself. There are plenty of people who manage their numbers with success, but as the days went by, and I knew my corals were being compramised, I knew I had to something more.

Mark, so the worst part is over :) Glad to hear you are on the way back.

So I'm in a similar situation, I'm really not seeing any AEFW when I'm basting (i've also been doing revive dips on the corals I can remove, which is about 50% of the acros, and nothing is really coming off), and the corals are looking better than ever, but like they say, you never know. I'm consider going a different route mentioned by Greg Carroll (he hasn't used it but new someone that had successfully). The technique would be to remove the acro encrusted rocks and subject them to revive dips once a week, then replace them in the tank. I have some huge rocks and am fairly attached to my aquascape so I keep hoping I won't have to...ugh, decisions....

Thanks Mike :)

It was a tough decision and I had a hard time taking out the 1st batch of acros. I thought about dipping the rocks and everything attached, but I would not be able to inspect all the nooks and crannies. I have some corals that seen to only have encrusted over the last couple of years it seems, but the good news is that coral grow pretty fast.

I know your situation is a lot different as you are limited in space. I am looking at this as a chance to learn and teach. Many of the old threads are gone and there are so many new people in the hobby. If people document their trials as well as their successes, it will help other hobbyist along the way.

I understand about being attached to your tank and the way it looks, but I don't know about you, but when I was looking at my tank, I would look more for bite marks than how good the overall tank looked. Does this make sense?

I agree - I think its best to be open about problems. Even the best of the best have them.

That totally makes sense. Plain and simple, if you aren't enjoying your tank, its a problem, and it was the right thing to do something about it.

As for your ? in my thread, I think for now, the tank is looking good and I'm enjoying it. So I think I'll continue basting and see how it goes. Some food for thought, since it seems like some people can get away with basting (the recent pics of ReefBum's tank are a perfect example), and for others it doesn't work...I think its very possible there are multiple species of AEFW, some harder to get rid of than others. More evidence in support of this theory is their varied choice in diet. Mine LOVE millies, and pretty much leave my nana and valida alone. Others say that AEFW don't touch millies and validas are their favorite...could be different species with different dietary preferences. Out of curiousity did yours go for millies or validas more?

I have seen them on a millipora and on the garf bonzai.

I have given some thought to the "different strain" theory and since is basically no scientific classification, it is really hard to say either way.

Good luck and I will continue to be follow along.

Keep up the good work Mark!

I know how much your tank and corals mean to you and just how hard this is to do.

Hang in there buddy!

Thanks James, That is another reason why I was debating on removing the rock. I will have to take a look at that. Thanks.

When this is all said and done, I might need to come by and get a couple new goodies :)

How is your progress coming along?

Mark

How are things going in the QT station?

Also I was wondering if you still have the Tubb Horrida if I am spelling that right LOL?

The piece I got from you is doing awesome.

But I am not sure what color it is supposed to be,
so I was wondering if you have a good pic of yours to judge mine by.

Thanks

Chris

Chris, Things are fine in the QT, but its been less than a week.

I still have a couple of pieces of the Horrida, but I lost the main colony due to my low alk and then the dip. Oh well ;)

From a month ago.
