Maroon mating with Domino?

Has anyone ever heard of a Maroon clownfish mating with a Domino Damsel?

I have one maroon clownfish and one domino damsel that host a RBTA. They have been in the tank together for over two years.

Yesterday I noticed clown eggs on the rock the anenome is attached to. I know they have zero chance of survival. I am just wondering if it is unusual for a clown to spawn in captivity when there is no other clown present?

Yep, the domino.

I only have four fish, a maroon clown, a domino damsel, a yellow tail blue damsel, and a scribbled rabbitfish.
 
Yeah, he's usually swimming around whereas the clown is usually in the RBTA, but he's in it enough that I'd say he shares it.

This pic is kind of old, as you can see by the size of the clown, but it shows them together in it. It's really cool. He gets in it and lays down and "flutters". Every time I try to get a video, he stops and swims away.

That is one huge domino! While I agree it is highly unlikely that the eggs were fertilized, I'd keep an eye on it! If even one starts to hatch you may find a new breed named after yourself!!
 
And "I" thought I was the only one that had the problem.

I don't have an anemone, however my clown kinda hosts the front left corner of zoa's. I always see my Damsel dancing vertically and brushing up against my clown.


I've had them together for 1.5 months. The damsel is smaller than the clown, by about .5". There was never any aggression. The damsel immediately went submissive to the clown as soon as it was introduced.

Now, the damsel does this vertical dance move right against the clown. It's hard to explain and even harder to comprehend. :confused:
 
Can anyone verify that these are clown eggs? I couldn't find much info online about clowns mating with dominos. i know its not a true mating and the domino wouldn't be able to fertilize them or watch after them or anything, but was it's presence enough for the clown to lay eggs in the first place or do they sometimes just lay eggs when no mate is present? if so, how common is it for them to lay eggs when no other clown is present?

A mature female fish is excellent condition can fill up with eggs in the absence of a mate. Once she makes the eggs, she has to lay them. It's not super common in an aquarium, but it definitely happens.

My guess is that the maroon and domino are sufficiently different that there wasn't enough stimulation to get another species to even attempt to fertilize the fish. Because fertilization is external, fish species go through a specific ritual in order to actually spawn and only fish of the same species know the right formula.

I highly doubt you are going to see any "domino maroons", but it definitely is a good sign that the maroon is healthy enough to produce eggs...

if they are still there and darkening, with silver tips then they are fertile, and they are definitely clown eggs., does the domino tend them or mouth them at all?

That's what I get for speaking in absolutes...

My point though was that fish can and do lay eggs in absence of a mate. If they are unfertilized, they will fungus up pretty quickly.

Personally, I think it's highly unlikely that they are viable, but I'd love to be wrong...
 
Wow...did you feed your domino steroid or something? I don't think I've ever seen one that big before. If those eggs are fertalized you might just have the next latest clown craze...I can see it now, there's now to classification for dominos...true dominos & false dominos...or better yet...picasso dominos...
 
i think the picture makes the domino look a lot bigger than it is. if the babies hatch, you can call them DONEMO FISH xD
