Matrix (and siporax) questions, to keep from derailing Sahin's thread.....

My question is if you run Siporax do you have to get rid of your macro algae do to the low nutrients?

Reef keeping is life!

Maybe for those with very low bioload, but generally, no. I have a couple of friends who have Siporax and refugiums that still grows chaeto.

Here are a few questions for Siporax users. My 50 gallon SPS reef runs at 25 ppm nitrate with Zeovit filtration and a skimmer and is fed every other day. Zeo is not working very well and one of the main issues is that you have to change out the zeo media every month hence reducing bacterial filtration. I would like to gradually replace zeo rocks with Siporax media. What is the difference between Marin Siporax and Siporax? Are their preferred media sizes to use (smaller vs larger Siporax cylinders for example) for reef tanks? Amazon has Siporax available in several different packages and the labelling is quite vague. Thank you...........................Jim

I run about 4-5L in my 100 gal and still grow chaeto. I do have to dose nitrate from time to time. I have 18 fish now and yesterday nitrate was 0.2. I feed a lot and regularly due to all of the fish 5 being anthias.

What size is your clean up crew?

What are your phosphates at? How do you control them?

Phosphate 0.02 as of last week it ranges from 0.02-0.03. Haven't run GFO in 6 months +. CUC is a few snails, some hermits and a conch. My 2 tanks do a great job keeping my rocks spotless.

When you have it all dialed in you don't need much CUC. When most people get that first bloom people get whats adequate at that time, but as the reef matures and everything balances out it becomes too many CUC quickly -- Unless you've got some stubborn arse algae

What is another filtration in your system, please?
What type of skimmer, any phosphates remover, carbon, biopellets or any of other filtration?
Thanks.

New to the thread, and going to go back and read from pg 1 when I've got some free time. Purchased a bunch of marinepure then found out about the aluminum leaching so I think I'm going to go with Siporax instead. System will consist of 90g display with 2 50g frag tanks plumbed in. All ran off a ~40g sump and possibly a remote tank filled with siporax (still trying to figure out how to utilize it in my system since I had the sump designed around the marinepure).

I found a us seller that has 10L of the 25mm for roughly $200 shipped. Is that within the average price range?

I'll buy your MarinePure!

The AL "problem" has yet to gain any substance other than tests have shown a rise in AL after MarinePure has been added. No one has been able to prove that it has any adverse effect on anything in your system. I've been using my MarinePure block for 10 months and my corals are doing great. Love the product and ordered more. Will be here Tomorrow.

Seems expensive to me.

Check Ebay, I got 10L for about $90 from across the pond.

It's 16 weeks since I put 3l of Siporax 15mm in my sump. My nitrates are still very high (fifties) and if any change, it has been to worse. Siporax is in a low flow zone in my sump and my sump is quite clean of detritus (I use to syphon and stir them often).

I used to have a MarinePure block in the sump too, but I quit using it because I has having some problems with my corals and was concerned about aluminium leeching being the problem.

Can you help me to have a better idea about what is happening in my tank?

What are you phosphates? I guessing your tank is po4 limited keeping your nitrates high.

It takes 3+ months for Bacteria to colonize bio media. Nothing will happen for a lil while still.

0.018 this wednesday. I do have phosphates but my question is, do I have enough phospates?
I've already ordered Brightwell Neophos to increase my phosphates to 0.05-0.07, do you think it's a good idea?

I'm just coming out of a long battle in a similar position where my nitrates got up to 50's+ & my Po4 was at 0.03....& NOTHING i did would get them to lower.
I only got movement after i unpluged my GFO & let my Po4 rise.
Divide your No3 by 150 is about where i saw reduction start to happen
eg No3-50/150 = Po4 needs to be 0.3
That was what i found using Aquaforests ProBioS bacteria anyway
