Matt's 5000ltr Display

Clean and well thought out on everything, from the electrical outlets to the plumbing, great idea on the tile to keep any humidity controlled to a minimum, I'm going to stay tuned to this build since I know it will turn out awsome.

Thx very much for taking the time to keep us all up to date, Matt. I can see by the images of the horrible state of the insides of that vat that not everything is as one could hope.

Frankly, your overall system contains so many elements that I sometimes get lost in it. I think that's why so many of us want an FTS of the display tank. It's something we can all understand.

Thanks Dave. I had thought that I would clean the inside of the vat before taking the pictures ( I need help :spin2:) but I decided against it. This vat has stored live rock for a couple of years and so is a little grubby inside.
If i get chance I will draw out a diagram showing the filtration. i always get lost looking at other peoples sumps and plumbing etc so a diagram will help I am sure. Thanks Dave, I truly appreciate your continued support.

Tagging along. The nice thing about this built, is that it is done by solely by you and not a professional tankbuilder.

Thanks Aqua20. I dont think I could have employed a pro tank/system builder to do this. Firstly I am having so much fun doing it, secondly I have changed my mind or had to roll with the punches on several occaisions which would have been extremely difficult to do if i was instructing another party.

man thats going to be a lot of water.....

Hi Marrc007. Yes its a fair bit. About 8000ltrs in total I think at the last count. Maybe a little less because I have had to run the cryptic tank lower than I would have liked due to access issues. I think the first fill will need about 15 buckets of salt.

This is a dream set up. Your expertise is obvious in your work. Great job!

Thanks TheFishTeen. I am winging it. I am always wrong and if it transpires that I have got something right then you could bet your last dollar it was an idea I have stolen from someone else!

Hi Reefers4Life. Thankyou, thats very kind. I appreciate you stopping by and your support. I wish I had your confidence in the final product!

Looking good! Very impressive build.

I have been doing a lot of research on pumps and I have narrowed it down to the Laguna Max-Flos or the Sicce Syncra HF series. The manual for the Laguna's state, "The pump must be immersed in water completely. This pump must never operate outside of water." Have you run these pumps externally before without any problems or do you know people who have?

The Sicce Syncra's can be plumbed submersed or external and I like that flexibility...but I don't like the price (almost double the cost of a comparable Max-Flo).

Hi Aldiaz.

Yes the pumps can be plumbed internally or externally. I have 40mm flexi going into the hose barbs that the pump comes with. There are a good few people using them externally and have been for some time. They can run a little hotter (obviously) when used externally but other than that they are pretty tried and tested here in the UK as reliable and quiet pumps. Not to mention they are pretty ecconomic and cheap to buy originally.

I looked at the sicce pumps, and loads of others. IIRC the sicce only bettered the laguna on one point, the head height. I think the sicce has a bigger max head height but not by a lot. This wasnt a factor for me as the laguna still pumps to over 4m which is more than enough for my build.

A mate of mine has been kindly babysitting some corals for me for too long now waiting for me to get this build up and running.

He recently created a timelapse video of one of my corals in his tanks. I thought it was really cool so I thought I would share.

Thank you for the info Matt! I ordered the 4200 (aka 16000 on the other side of the pond) today. I plan to run the pumps submerged in my sump in the winter when I could use a little extra heat and external in the summer when I don't want additional heat.

Thanks again.

Let me restate....Wow that was the coolest video of a coral I have ever seen! It was just fascinating. I thought it was a video of your coral in someone eles tank while it is being housed until your tank is ready. Right? and I agree with all the other posters. We need a new FTS of your tank. :) I LOVE the thread, and the tank build. Thank you for taking the time to share it with the RC world.

Thanks Mrs Music. You are right that it is in somebody elses tank..but a shop tank. My tank hasnt progressed at all unfortunately to justify an fts..soon I hope, soon.

Thanks for the compliment, this is actually my first coral time lapse attempt but i hope to do dozens of them and piece them together into a longer video (but shorter clips) with a nice soundtrack. The coral is in my shop systems tank, along with a whole bunch of other corals matt purchased while they were small but are now growing to be big corals!
I'll get a pic of the double monti soon and stick it in this thread

I plumbed in the phosphate reactor yesterday

IMG_6360.jpg

It will be fed via an OR6500 pump which will also feed the frag tank from the DSB

The upper valve will control the flow through to the frag tank.

I also plumbed the Eheim pump that will be the closed loop for the cryptic tank.
