Maxspect ‘Riptide' Prototype Gyre Generator Pump

I was lucky enough to beta test a prototype maxspect riptide and all I can say is wow. The prototype is the same size as the 35w model. The prototype riptide pushes water all the way across my 8' tank and makes vortechs at the opposite end. The one riptide pushes just as much or even a little more water then one of my mp60s.

the more and more i read a bout this riptied. i have to finally ask. isnt having the flow come from the same side constantly not a beneficial as random flow patterns?

in one of the vids posted in this thread show a torch coral that is constantly being blown to one side. i always thought that corals liked random flow from different sides and angles??? isnt this riptide defeating that logic?

Peder,

Looking forward to your experience with this pump. Looks like it's promising. My only concern with this pump is that it has a direct drive motor. With the problems the Reef Flow have with their seals leaking I am wondering if there is any possibility for water to get into the motor sooner or later.

Hi everyone,

Im so lucky to be prototype tester in Denmark.
I am at work now - I will put it in my tank later today, and give update.

My tank is 140X120+X75 cm, and the primary flow, are until later today done by 1 Tunze 6305, and 1 tunze 6255.

My plan is to replace both pumps with just 1 Riptide.
I did a 2 minute test at the danish dealer - and OMG it looks sweeet, and after being on for 20 secs - the 500 gallon tank was completely full off detritus. Really makes currents - better than anything I have ever seen before.:spin3:

So I cant wait to come home from work today:beer:

Regards
Peder

In nature, the vast majority of corals experience primarily laminar flow, sometimes switching directions every 6 hours and 12 minutes, other times remaining constant (depending on local conditions).

The little tornado's that this pump seems to make do not stay in the same spot all the time from the video's I've seen. It's mostly the same direction over all but there is some variance to it.

For those testing, any noticeable noise? My MP40s get fairly annoying at full speed and I don't want to repeat that again.

What Im testing is a prototype.(betaversion)

This includes a PDF file, which informs whats corrected in the production version - and the vibration and noise should not exist in the final version.

This is due to the fact, that a new axel and motor are in the productionline, but not given to betatesters.

I have already ordered 2 - i really love how it moves the water, and I will save a lot of money on a yearly basis in regard of electricity bill - which is really high here in DK

+1.

I could easily have missed someone addressing this...but wouldn't constant strong flow in one direction mean soft corals are constantly leaning one way all the time, and won't that make sps corals grow funny? In the past when I've used static flow pumps, nearby sps actually seem to grow toward the flow. I can see the technical benefit of creating a whirlpool in the tank essentially, but won that make for some strange growth. Unless someone had two and alternated them every couple hours or so

Seems highly likely that the first feature upgrade made for these will be to add a controller that has programs that adjust the flow ...

Then one could have a pair, one on either end of a tank, and get some nice back-and-forth going.

Not if you have it pulsing. Most corals in the wild receive flow in one direction. Also, the riptide can spin both ways so you could always have it change direction every 6 hours or so, which more closely resembles what happens on a real reef.

Coralvue/Maxspect already said they'd have a controller for it. I think they're also developing a cable for apex, etc as well.

Hi Peder is it possible to alternate the flow in 6 hour periods to simulate the tide ?

Hi,

I cant do that on my prototype - this model is NOT the final version.
My prototype have a earlier version of the motor, axel and controller.

I have heard u can do it with the finished version - being sold very soon

Hope this helps U
