Maxspect ‘Riptide' Prototype Gyre Generator Pump

Well, since this is public now, here is the Gyre spanking a pair of MP40 in my tank :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GID4pFUNJts

The two MP40wES are synced in Reef Crest mode at 60% power, the Gyre is running in constant mode at 20% power (which is 9.5 watts from the wall!), and neither were run at the same time (so only the MP40s or only the Gyre).

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I'm very seriously considering putting one of these into my 90 gallon. I wonder how it would interact with a wave box, anyone try?

Man, the coral snow test really showed some crazy undertow with this pump. Reminded me of Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. "Get over here!"

One unit is able to handle my full tank with sps dominated ? Zero deadspots?
That is correct. Once the water column starts moving, it becomes difficult to stop, you have a more energy with less resistance throughout your tank. Check out the Advanced Aquarist article I linked to above for more about mass water movement.

There are more videos shared among the beta testers of the same 50w unit in much larger tanks than yours or mine. These things are incredible.

will it destroy my sand bed? or will it leave them alone

Your tank is much taller than mine so yours should be ok, though if it is powder sand then it will blow a bit until it resettles. My sand is 1.2-2.0mm, but for some reason my MP40s were always blowing it around. So far so good with the Gyre.

Ben, do you see much different flow patterns when mounting the pump vertically (if you haven't tried, could you)? I'm envisioning placing one of these vertically on a rear wall and creating flow that traverses around the tank.

That is what I originally wanted to do, but my tank being 16" tall has only around 12" of water by the time you add the sand and the tank not being filled to the rim, and this model is too large for that, it disturbs my sand. There will be a shorter version (7" in length according to the latest vid on the CoralVue Youtube channel) that should be much better suited for that.

Strange, the video has audio for me, but the screen stays black the whole time? Plenty of other youtube videos work just fine.

edit: a driver update came out today for my graphics card, up to date now - awesome vid and thanks for sharing!
I was hoping I didn't break the video lol :)

Thanks jedimasterben: the video is awesome. I had seen it before learning that the Vortech were running at 60% and the Gyre only at 20% . Knowing that is absolutely astonishing.

Just a question. What about noise? How does the Gyre compare to a Vortech mp40? And to a Tunze 6105? (if you ever had one running in your tank)

The 50 W Gyre is scheduled to arrive to Spain by the beginning of November. I'm impatient to see one of them running in my tank.

The Gyre makes no audible noise unless you have it really agitating the water's surface, in which case you hear the water noise :)

It's well worth the wait!

Thanks a lot because noise was my last concern. I'm very happy to learn that is silent. Of course water movement in the surface makes noise, but that is easy to correct.

I had been thinking for the last months about how to modify flow in my 130 gallons. I currently have two Tunze 6055 and one 6105. Water movement was fine when I set up the tank, but as corals grow the movement is more and more limited. I had read about laminar flow and gyre and then learnt about this great thing. I'm really eager to see what the Gyre can do.

I have read that the single controller can create surges and pulses. Can it also reverse flow to alternate the direction of the gyre or would you need two Gyres to achieve that?

No, the Gyre in its current form cannot change direction of flow, it only has one output. The, well, I guess they're still impellers, are kinda like squirrel-cage fans (there are pictures out there that are pretty close up to it, you can see the design). I know that was originally a feature they were planning for, but it seems that in the current version it did not pan out that way. Whether it is planned for a future model (or if it is possible, I'm not really sure that it is) then that is a secret that Maxspect is keeping locked up. I am bummed that it cannot switch directions (I pushed and pushed for it a couple months back!), but damned if it isn't still so badass as it is.
