Maxspect LED owners!!!

Would 2 x MaxSpect G2-230 cover a 36" wide tank and penetrate down to 30" deep? I'm using 3 x 400w halides and my electricity bill is beyond insane.

I am putting in an order for the lenses. Brian at Fins Reef says they should start shipping here in the next couple of weeks. Here's why ...

I have dual 110's over a 4'x2'x16" tank. My 2 RBTAs are clearly not happy with the amount of light they are getting... they are walking up the rocks & "stretching out" if you know what I mean. This has started me looking for solutions. I thought about spotlighting the 'nems with a Par38 bulb ... and I thought about changing back to T5's ... and then I did some math on the new optics. I will walk through the math, and maybe someone will find this helpful ... or call BS on me.

My tank is shallow, and the lights hang 16" over the sand bed. They are off-centered some, since I placed them closer to the back to be more over the rockscape. The edge of the light is 10" from the front of the tank, and 6.75" from the back.

With 60* lenses, the each LED will project a circle downwards with a radius of 9.24" on the sand bed (16 * tan 30). This means that I can pretty much cover the whole tank with the 60* lens, with the exception of about 1" or so in the front of the tank (nothing lives there now anyway). The coverage gets even better if I raise them just a bit. But even if I leave them where they are, I can fully cover the back & get nearly the entire front with the 60 degree lens. The dimensions on the sides are similar to the back, and they will overlap in the middle.

I realize the LEDs are not exactly on the edges of the fixture, but it's "close enough for government work". It is easier to raise the lights a bit than to drop them (esp when you only have 2" between the LED and water as it is), and the 90* will spill a lot of light out of the tank compared to the 60* lens.

I attached a little drawing I did that may or not be helpful. MS Paint is fun when you are trying to remember your SOHCAHTOA from 5th grade...

Anyway, this is what convinced me that the optics are a GREAT investment on these things ... more light into the tank, less light into the room ... etc.

For shure the lens will greatly increase the light output but I have made several measurement on the maxpspect without lens and I realy doubt your anemone dont have enought light 16 inch under.

Hi everyone,
Where did you guys bought your light? I order from finsreef.com last Tuesday and never get the tracking info even I email them and call them. Last time there was a guy pick up the phone and promise they will give me tracking number after they find it, until now no words from him again. Is the normal? No tracking for a $1000 dollar order?

Did anybody that bought one from one of the group buys have the white LED's stop working. I've never really used mine. I've turned it on a few times and held it over one of my tanks just to see what it looked like, but never had it on for more than 2 to 3 minutes. Today I was going to show it to a friend but the white LED's weren't working. Who should I contact about fixing this?

This happened to me, but on the blues. You likely have a single burnt out LED that needs to be replaced. Pretty simple actually, once you get the part & figure out which LED is the issue.

I hope that's what it is. I'm surprised to hear it's wired in series and not parallel. How do you recommend that I figure out which one it is. Would a battery work, and if so what size battery should I use?

I used 2 AA batteries in series.

Apparently the newer fixtures have different stars with some IC on them that will complete the circuit still if the LED is burnt out. I assume when you get a new star it will have this little IC on it ... mine did.

Anyone bought from finsreef?

Dont worry about it. Brian is good people. You will get the lights and if anything goes wrong he is quick to make it right.

Heres a pic of my g2, today I replaced a blue with a cree dark blue and another one with a red, got both from Brian at finsreef. The cree are tiny but super bright. You can't really tell from the pic the difference in blue but its more of a darker blue you would see on a moonlight, really makes the greens pop. The red seems to make orange pop.

Here it is after wiring, the cree is the tiny one near the middle:

The cree is to the left of the red led:

nice any shots of the tank with the new light swap?

ill post some this afternoon if you promise not to laugh at my fuzzy purple algae problem, maybe I should post some of my 125 too so I don't feel so bad about my red sea having that algae problem.

I've beaten green bryopsis and cyano in my early stages of my 125, but I just cant seem to shake this fuzzy stuff in my red sea max.

So are people still happy with these? I am thinking about ordering a G2 170 for my 57 gallon rimless.

I have my G2 230W for my 92g tank since March this year. It has been running without any problem and all my SPS are growing well with nice PE and color. I am happy with my purchase. The only thing I see negative is the clock runs a few minutes fast per month but it is quite insignificant.
