May do a new aquascape today

I have been inspired by some of the cool aquascapes that I have seen on RC lately. I am thinking of redoing mine. I have alot of room and it looks 'open' but the rock has somehow over time ended up stacked against the back wall. I hate that. I am going to redo today if I find the energy and follow some of Steve Weast's rules of aquascaping. He had one of the coolest scapes in his old Oregon reef before it crashed.

Here are some of the 'rules':

Here's Steve Weast comments............he says it well concerning this pic........

"Greg (Bonsainut) posted the best example of aquascaping perfection. It's the one I always come back to for inspiration....and why ? ....because I believe the answer to all your aquascaping questions are right there in that pic..... you just need to notice its philosophies...

1) have just as much positive space (rocks and corals) as negative space (open water and sand)

2) Don't worry about creating nooks/crannies/caves/etc....they just will be eventually covered by livestock. Instead focus on the general rock shape that has both low and high points...perhaps even breaking the surface. Focus on large details...not small crevices (especially if you have a large tank).

3) Maintain an algae free back (and sides if possible) to create an illusion of infinite depth....contrary to what we'd all like to believe, coralline does not create an attractive back drop...only a distracting one.

4) hide all the things of man.....overflows...pumps...pipes....etc.

5) don't clutter the sand bed with a bunch of livestock....a clam or two...maybe...but that's it. Cluttered sandbeds just make the overall display look too busy. You can improve the overall display tremendously by just removing all the frags, zoas, blastos, etc that so many people seem to keep on the sandbed these days......it just distracting.

And finally....the aquascaping will have to be adjusted every so often.....growth eventually will destroy the best of aquascaping. I've seen so many tanks start off so promising, with fantastic rockwork.... only to spiral down into something less so..... just because the aquarist didn't take action to prevent its downfall or simply just over stocked it.. It usually ends up with a solid line of rock....all at the same height....covered in livestock....from end to end. There could be all the purple monsters, acans and superman monties in the world in there....but, if the overall structure is two dimensional and over crowded, it's just blah.....OR you could have the most ordinary of corals....and softies at that....as long as the rock structure follows the above guidelines, it will inspire all who view it and deliver the oooohs an aaaahs......just like the Japanese tank above.

This subject is very dear to my heart....I spent this whole three day weekend re-working my aquascaping.....it was just that time again."

Weast's Old Tank:

Wow, everyone is so chatty today. We must have the slowest club board on RC..... :'( Does anyone ever want to talk about their tank, equipment, show pictures, etc? Come on folks, lets get a more active forum :0)

I want to see pics of your tank and what you think needs to be changed.

A chart showing your plans of what you are going to move where.

Before and after pics with a breakdown of what you feel you accomplished by moving rocks.

Hee Hee!!! Sorry but I admit it the weather was just too nice today, and I have been busy outside.

That is except I worked on the lighting on the two small tanks early this morning and did my water changes.

Then this evening I redid my water top off on the 55 and played with my heaters (like you told me to do) and this is the first time I have sat down today, other than driving to the hardware store "twice"!!!

Well tell us, did you redo your aquascaping today??

Yes, I redid it somewhat. I tried to open things up a bit more, took all corals off the sandbed, and scraped the back glass down clean. Looks pretty good. I will try to take some pics tomorrow.

Look forward to seeing the finished work! I thought it looked pretty good before though?

Mike

I was happy with it before, but I know things can always be improved upon. Like after my few changes today, I think it looks better to me. I always hated corals on my sandbed, it looks cluttered. I finally made an end to that.

I saw your post late last night about redoing the tank and it got me to thinking about mine and getting all the stuff off the sand too .then my lights went out for the night so I had to wait. Well I got up this morning and worked on it some ..I am purely out of room along the back wall . My corals are opening up so huge these days that most are overlapping. I need to find some more local salt water folks so I can share some of these old standbys..like the red and purple mushrooms and some of more prolific zoas...I have tried to put all the goodies from Malisa and the frag swap in the foreground but I ran out of glue ..I will get more and see if I can glue up some more . The tank is looking amazing these days ....so see you did inspire me..I was just quiet about it...lol

Sounds like its time for a bigger tank! :0)

The cluttered sandbed issue is exactly why Im planning a seperate frag tank. Getting the frags and the ugly frag racks out of the display is a priority right now. After getting them out I think I'll finally be able to open up my rockwork and create more dimension. Right now Jay I'm using your current scape as a guide.

whoa dudes...remember the tank went thru the floor when I moved it to Mississippi ..well I only had the space for the 90 secured so I will have to make it work forever and ever....unless I pull up new carpet or new flooring and have more support added...naw I will just stick to my 90....it is tempting though...
