Mazzei Injector Protein Skimmer

All good!

All good!

Hey all,

Lt Hudson, the skimmer was purchased from Chris Shea who was formerly known as Pasreef1. Let's see. It's built pretty solidly and it's really neat in that it's easy to change the thing up, especially the foam riser tube/secondary reaction chamber. What I mean is that you could buy a longer one so that you could increase dwell time, etc. and all you have to do is stick/pop that sucker in the uniseal. He is currently working on increasing the diameter of the foamer/riser tube and I am currently helping him test out different venturi configurations on it so I'm a bit of a guinea pig but I love messing around with that stuff although school sometimes gets in the way. Haha.

He's a real nice guy and has given me a lot of support, he just really wants to make a great skimmer and I'm right there with him on that one.

Littleprince, check out my gallery, there are like 5 additional pics to that one and I will be updating with more in the weeks to come.

I will be trying out a mazzei kynar 784 venturi (I have a mak4 which should generate sufficient pressure and flow to take advantage of the larger bore size) and also a slightly modded venturi, which Chris has said produces even more bubbles than even the mazzei when placed in the proper position, although I have yet to see the quality of bubbles (definitely seems to be an excessive quantity) but that will be seen in the weeks to come. :)

Peace,
John H.

Seals good!

Seals good!

Hey Lt. Hudson,

I think the seals were a great idea, and since I've got them working for me, they aren't an idea anymore!

Hehe. Let's see. One of them is leaking a tiny, tiny bit (this one isn't supposed to be leaking, probably due to inadequate smoothing of the cut edges and can be easily fixed) and I know that the largest one is prone to leaking, however I haven't seen it and am pretty impressed by the whole thing. I'm suggesting stuff to Chris to improve the design and he really is a great guy and just wants to get a good skimmer out there. He's been really open to suggestions and provides amazing customer support.

If you do decide to buy from him, make sure he sands the cut edges really well. If you decide to make one yourself, you should make sure to sand them well yourself.

I will be forming a more concrete opinion on it in the coming weeks as I put it through various tests. My friend will be pitting it against his CS 6-2 euroreef on his 120 within a few weeks and we'll really see how the skimmer does.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Peace,
John H.

I should be doing school work instead of experimenting on my reef all the time! :D

ok, all glued, routed, everything bought. just waiting for it to cure overnigth then i think i am gonna run it external on my 20H for a while to let it break in and so i can see what it will do!!

i had an unfortunate accident w/ my rounter. the bearing came off my flush bit so i gouged some of the collection cup at the top of the bottom flange...it is on the inside and doesn't affect performance but ****ED ME OFF!!

also the part where my 1st riser inserts into the box wasn't a GOOD route so i had to use a LOT of weldon #16.

i am gonna try it out w/ my mag5 while i fix my mag 700...then i might try the mag 700.

taggin' along on this. I've been doing tons of research over which skimmer design to go along with, and I've finally decided with Mazzei Injector design.

If anyone know's where to get these in Canada, please let me know.

Pictures Lunchbucket!

Hey Lunchbucket,

Don't be afraid at post some pics of the performance, I'd like to see how you have it set up since you said that it might look a bit like the MR skimmers but with a mazzei injector.

We won't laugh at your mistakes, lord knows I've messed up countless times with tools and the plumbing job! :D

Peace,
John H.

rufio173 - will get pics sometime tomorrow. but it looks EXACTLY like the MR-1 but will have a mazzei injector. it will look the same because i got all the DIY stuff from Andy at MRC's :D

Can't wait to see lunch's Skimmer in action...
Couldn't get my tank drilled this week, gonna have to wait till next monday... its killing me sitting here with an empty tank wanting to be filled...

spears quick release

spears quick release

Anyone know where we could purchase the spears quick release fittings that several of the skimmers use now?

The new myreef and euroreef skimmers all use this fitting.

After some research I wanted to remind everyone to be sure to calculate their head pressure when selecting a pump. And depending on where you plan on inputing the mazzei, there may be enough pressure in the skimmers reaction chamber acting against it to reduce it's suction. It would'nt surprise me if pumps were over-rated for their flow and head ratings. The 584's max flow is between 168 and 630 gph.

Hey bucket, Your skimmer is coming along nicely. Looks like it should be decent.

I just loosely threw on the mazzei on the intake of the mag 5. Much louder noises but seemed to work pretty damn well...
Gonna have to pick up some parts tommorow, got a pretty gd idea...

Optimal Aspirating venturi?

Optimal Aspirating venturi?

Hey Littleprince,

I actually plan on doing something very similar with my skimmer within a few months but I have to put the skimmer through the works with other venturis I'm trying out! I'll probably take the best venturi and then partially push it with my gen-x/mak4 pump and then use a modded pinwheel impeller on my maxijet 1200 thought up by cheapreef to chop those bubbles from the venturi to an even smaller size! I'm just going for more efficiency. Let us know the results if you do decide to set it up somewhat like an aspirating venturi.

Peace,
John H.

I'm going to go pick up the couple of plumbing parts I need now for the venturi on the intake. Not sure How i'm gonna fit it in my poor tub though...

hmm, i guess when i test it next week i will throw the mag 950 on there....since littleprince was running an iwaki 70 on it
