Meet Clive

Any updates???

Oh hey, sorry :)

I tried the coke bottle lid in the sand trick for a few days, seemed to do a bit better. Then I took the lid off, with no real additional improvement. Finally, out of desperation more than anything else, I tried a 15 minute freshwater dip. After that, he seems to have improved significantly. The very end of the mantle isn't fully extended, but he's back up on the rocks with most of it hanging out in the current.

I may give him another, final dip if that bit of the mantle stays unextended.

The other worry I have is that, in a month of being in the tank, he hasn't attached to the rocks yet. I read over on wetwebmedia that a trick is to put a small shell directly underneath the clam in order to give something very close by to attach to. So I'll probably give that a shot this weekend when I get some time between football games :)

Supposedly, a pinched mantle can be caused by a protozoal infection. Those particular microorganisms cannot survive in fresh water, but a clam can for a reasonable amount of time. So you leave the clam in fresh water for 20 minutes or so, and with a little bit of luck the infection (if there is one) heals up. In my case, I think that did the trick, although I may end up giving him one more dip.

Owen, glad to hear your clam is doing better!! you did the right thing as I think there was not much more time to wait before you dipped. Clive lives on!!

LOL thanks :) I'm glad he's still plugging away, not least because he cost a significant amount of money (for me anyway). I also hate to have things die in my tank, I feel like if I purchase an animal I have some responsibility to keep it alive.

Assuming I'm not too turkey-addled tonight I'll try and post some new pics of progress.

lol sorry got caught up with work et al.

This a picture from 5 minutes ago. He's doing reasonably well. Thanks for all the replies :) Still a little concerned about the one end of the mantle, but far better than before. He also hasn't attached, but he's not getting knocked around so I'm not going to worry about it too much.

I should also mention that he's feeling well enough to lay down some new shell -- hard to see in the picture, but there's some white shell around the edges.

IME, Maxima can tolerate 30 min dips OK unless they are fairly fall gone.
From the last picture, I think that the mantle still very retracted near the end of the clams and the edge rolled up a little which is very typical for PMD. One spot near the middle is pinched also. If this get worse and especially if it get worse during the day I would recommend re-dip him for 30 min. Good luck.
