Question for you all.

I've been loosing fish for the last few months. About 6 or 7 in total. All have been smaller fish, most of them being wrasses. The fish simply disappear never to be seen again. I've yet to find a dead or sick fish so I figured that something is getting them.

Last weekend I saw my male Anthias pretty beat up with a few rips in the dorsal and a couple of scars on the body so I figured that something pretty big has to be doing this.

Now, the only thing I have in there that can produce that kind of damage due to its size now is a Strawberry crab. From what I understand, Strawberry Crabs are supposed to be "non-aggressive and friendly".

Can this crab be the problem? I know where it lives but the only way to get him out I'm afraid is by killing him. I don't want to do that if he's not capable. Suggestions' please.

According to a speech Bob Fenner gave to a local club, All crabs are opportunistic omnivores and therefore none of them can truly be considered reef safe 100% of the time.

Yeah, that what I figured. Should have known better when I got him a while back. It's going to be a PITA getting him out.

Thanks for the reply and by the way, great pictures with the new camera enclosure on your page! Stunning.

Yeah, I had to move break down my entire tank to find mine, but it helped that I was moving at the time. That crab ate way too many expensive fish!

There is now way I'm going to do that. I know where the crab lives just can't get to it. I'm wondering if I can trap it of something. Haven't figured it out yet.

hey megabite,

During your upgrade, how difficult was it to transfer over to the new tank? Did you lose alot of livestock? Also, did you add new sand? And lastly, what do you think of sugar sized sand? thx.

Sorry for the late response. The holidays really takes it out of me.

Takes a lot of prep time and work. Make sure you have some place to put your old water in and have plenty of new water ready to go. I used a few Rubbermaid trash cans to put the water and live stock in with heaters and a PH for water movement. I used some of my old sand. Top top layer only (about 1" - 1.5") and put the rest new. About a 4" sand bed. I did it all within a 24 hour period and only lost one fish. I think it was due to injury. It went pretty smoothly but you want to make sure you have plenty of time to do it.

Good luck!

Freaking 7D..... you have me so jealous now. I need to pay more attention, that camera came out a few months after I bought my T1i and I had no idea it was coming.
