Meredithi (Personifer) Angels

Where did you end up getting them from?

Also, do you have any other Angels in the tank especially in the same family? I was wondering if they fought. I know this family is more peaceful, but wasnt sure if they are territorial like others.

Im glad things worked out for you! Im also taking this risk on other Angels I plan to add.

I have a pair of Red Sea Regals Angels, an Asfur, and a Watanabei Angel and so far so good. The Meredithi's tend to do there own thing and ingnore the other angels. The bigger fish is a little more skittish and generally shy's away from the larger more active fish like my Sohal.
I ended up getting them from my LFS.
I have kept two other fish in this Genus (Conspiculatus and Scribbled) and none of them have ever been aggressive toward other tankmates.

Looks like you got lucky on that Asfur. Thats a risky one. Glad to hear you experience was positive. Do you have any pics of your nice fish? Do you also plan to add anymore angels?

The Asfur has actually been one of the best behaved. He only pics at a small Gorgonian and leaves everything else alone.

I probably will not add anymore angels unless I can get my hands on the following:

Small Conspiculatus Angel (3"-4" range) I think I could get it to cooexist with the Meredithi's if I got one small enough.
Genicanthus Personatus Pair - I have kept every other obtainable Genicanthus Angel except these guys. I have had chances to get them in the past but chickened out.
Small Bandit Angel Pair
Blue Potter's Angel
St. Paul's Rock Queen Angel Koi Color Morph - I know I am crazy but these are my holy grail of angels. I would risk them in a reef tank if I could get my hands on one.
Small Pair of Interruptus Angels - I had a large pair last year and one died shortly after accimilation and the 2nd was pretty destructive with corals so I want to try a smaller pair.

Here are pics:

Is this a male or a female? Any way to tell? It is at the LFS eating like a pig. I have been thinking about it for a while, but I don't know how long I can keep it in a 7x2x2 tank.

Unlike what is generally labeled by industry people, the face coloration has nothing to do with it being male or female. The main difference between the two is the males generally have a more elongated bodies, whereas the females are more rounded.
If I were to guess I would say it is a young male. It becomes more apparent when the fish is bigger.
By the way, that is a beautiful speciman. If it is eating prepare foods I would jump on it as long as you do not have any other large fish in the tank.

It is cheap too. I do have some larger fish, and the other ones don't quit growing. :) It is hard when your first 4 fish out of the tang are black tang, australian tusk, flagfin angel and a PBTxGoldrim. Man, I do have another 210. Maybe I should set it up... It is a good thing that my wife is cool.

How big would they get in captivity? This one is a real 5-6" now.

hey! someone actually knows! so many people (and online vendors) claim only male has spots. Scott Michaels book Angels and Butterflies has a couple of paragraphs where he quotes some pros who actually studied this fish, and there is no mention of any color differentiation between males & females.

It's just a marketing ploy to sell large Merdithi's for three times as much as smaller ones. Before I got my pair I always thought that only the bigger specimans have the face spots but the smaller one of the two has them and it is only 3".

Jda,
I have found that the larger ones can be somewhat skittish around other large fish. My big one runs for cover whenever I feed the tank and all of my tangs rush to the food. The smaller one just sticks its head in with all of the other fish and pigs out.

triggerfish, i just purchased a Personifier. I will let you know how it goes.

Congrats and good luck. I am looking forward to seeing how yours does.

im imported about 30 or so of these in past year. My experience has been very very good with them.

i've had some from 2" to 8-10" and ALL have eaten almost immediately. The smaller ones tend to feed right away, but i've found most if not all i have had ate within the first 3 days of holding.

I believe (as well as the collector and wholesaler i've talked to) that the bright blue face and the "holes" of orangey/yellow does indeed indicate a male. I have had about 10 males all of which were labeled upon arrival and all had the blue face and spots on the face.

I have also had an 9" female (no blue face and no spots) with a 6" male (bright blue face with spots) and they got along fine. if indeed the female was a male without the blue they would have surely scuffled almost immediately. The females are more rounded when they come in, and the males are elongated (more so then females anyway) The one pictured above is definitely a male (IME anyway)

i fed mine mainly mysis until i realized they weren't gaining weight (duh!) so i used fresh scallops (which the collector and wholesaler said they use to get some weight on them) All the personifers at it up greedily. One male personifer even started fighting with a male scribbled (which was a good 4-5" bigger) because it went after the scallop. :)

IME they do very well in captivity. However, i've only bought them from one place so maybe they just take care of them better?

Good luck with yours! I hope they do well. they are a nice angel.

zemuron, do you feed the scallops whole or do you chop them up and place them on the ground for him to come eat?

Well I also have a female scribble coming at the same time. Hopefully they will be friends. ;)

I just saw a few of these at a LFS. First time I ever saw these live. The black on these beauties look likee satin.

omg my gf and i were laughing about this the other day when we saw one in LFS. we just wanted to rub his silky sides so bad!

your experences with this fish is a little unusual. they have a history of not acclimating to captive life very well. im sure many members on this board can chime in with personal experiences supporting this. but I am glad that onces you ave experience with have been doing well. once again, no expert in the field has described difference in sex in regards to the colors on the face. only mentioned body sizes differences but no marking differences. Call me crazy, but i tend to believe them versus distributors and vendors.

triggerfish - Is your observation about larger ones being skittish based on a larger sample, or just your two? Also, how larger are we talking? More than 6"?
