Meredithi (Personifer) Angels

I think we discussed the spot related to sex already. Male and females both get spots. Males are usually longer in the body than females but other than that there is no known way to tell them apart besides sheer size difference.

Ok let me rephrase....

A 5" one has what looks like the beginnings of the spots. Its very faint near the face where the white band is.

Does this mean he/she is strarting to develop the bright yellow spots or thats as bright as it will get?

Zemuron, what is diff, between changing male and full male? Wont the changing male eventually become a full male?

Seems like he is changing. I dont know if personifers will continue the change without females (assuming they need females to change). It is possible it will complete the sex change. :)

Will they revert back to females if no females are present?

Has anyone ever had one that developed spots while in your care? Or did everyone get one with spots already there?

The LFH here has a 5" male personifier for several months now. I swear that it would eat toilet paper.

Hopefully, only ONE square at a time !!!!!!!!!! ;-)

The smaller speciman that I had showed good face spot development but the larger one deffinately has better face coloration. Given their size I am almost positive that the smaller one was still a sub adult and has not converted to a male or female yet. I wish I would have been able to keep it alive long enough to watch it mature.

I have also seen full adult male and females and the color intensity of the face was almost the same. The only difference is the male was slightly larger by 1 or 2 inches and his body was elongated whereas the female had a more rounded shape.

Here's what mine looked like. I miss her!

I have kept many personifer angels myself and I find them to be some of the easiest Chaetodontoplus angels to get to eat. By contrast I find that the bluespot, blueline and conspics are much harder to acclimate to captivity. I think it is important for the fish to be handled properly all along the way but expediency to the final vendor is pretty important. its like if they are transported around for more than a week without food they seem to 'forget' how to eat. They rarely refuse clams/mussels on the half shell. Thats how I get them started.

My LFS has two personifers, one is about four inches and the other is a little under five inches. Both look awesome, have been in the store going on three weeks and are absolutely devouring brine and mysis. They are both currently in two seperate tanks. Has anyone attempted to pairs these guys when they havent come in as a pair (which I believe wold be highly unlikely of happening)? What are my odds? They would be going into a six foot 150 gallon tank. I dont know if this makes a difference or not but the smaller of the two is definately showing the yellow dots on its face. The larger one only has a slight hint of developing the dots. Thanks for the input.

I bought two seperate Meredithi's one was 6" and the other was 3" and they formed a bonded pair pretty quick but like other large Angels, it doesn't mean that they will stay that way in an aquarium setting long term. I have seen Emperor Angels form similar pairs with one adult and one juve. but then start fighting once the juve. starts to change into adult colors.
